The Center for Architecture always has some wonderful exhibits, but there’s an upcoming show that’s special to us here, because it features 439 Metropolitan.

Allow me to refresh your memory. 439 Metropolitan was the LEED certified building in Williamsburg that I visited to interview architect Mark Helder for “A Walk Around the Blog“. You can read more about it here and here.

Well, you can have a look at the apartments on the website or you can get off your butts and visit the exhibit. “Make it Work/Engineering Possibilities” looks at how engineers envision and realize the future of our built environment by transforming structures, enhancing materials, and re-inventing building technologies.

The show runs January 22-April 25th at Center for Architecture on LaGuardia Place.

Well, after having received my official rejection letters from my state representatives, I know I’ll be spending inauguration night in front of a TV. The good news is that there will be viewing parties in public venues so I don’t have to sit there alone in my jammies with a bottle of champagne.

There’s still a chance to get to Washington:

Get on the Bus!

Harlem 4 still has space available at $100 per roundtrip ticket.

Inauguration Today has 2 buses left at $85 per seat.

Watch in New York

Symphony Space is opening their doors free to the public starting at 10am. They’ll have a big screen for viewing. Pack a lunch or buy snacks there.

The Village Pourhouse is showing the events on their big screens followed by a complimentary toast. They will be serving “Obama Mamma”, “Push Bush” , and “Barack-a-Bombs” shots all day long. No cover.

Discounted Dinners and Formal Balls

Park Slope’s V-Spot is discounting all beer, wine and cocktails by 50% and including free snacks for every table. Regular menu will still be available.

Oninaugurationday is hosting an Inaugural Ball at Hudson Terrace on W. 46th. $20 for general admission includes champagne reception with passed hors d’oeuvres. VIP tickets includes table and open bar. Formal attire recommended. Sounds too stuffy for me.

Bed Stuy Blog has a list of events in Ft. Greene, including Red Bamboo’s $5 drinks, complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a DJ spinning the tunes.

DIY Courses

On February 7th, City Tech will be hosting a series of DIY workshops and demonstrations by building inspector Larry Ubell. Pick up tips on basic carpentry, windows and insulation. $35 for the day in downtown Brooklyn. Register here.

Learn to reupholster your own flea market finds. This is something I MUST look into. I have a garage full of beautiful chairs that I need to bring into this century. The Furniture Joint in downtown Manhattan runs a hands on series for $450. I’ve heard great things about them, but the price scares me. Is there anywhere else?

Makeville Studio in Park Slope holds basic woodworking and intro to tool classes. They have some classes going this month and next. Prices start at $140.

Scrambling for Dumbo

So there I was slacking off at the beginning of the week when I get an email from Eric “Flea” Demby filling me in on a cancellation at the Dumbo market. I wasn’t booked to participate until the 24th/25th so I wasn’t too bothered by my lack of focus. But I figured it would be a good idea to be there since I was one of three featured in the Daily News article.

And so, after hours and hours of work yesterday, I’m still not finished with everything. But here’s where I’m at…

3181448299_6f2c7ce254.jpg

The God-forsaken chair is finally done. I bought this last winter and schlepped it from Beacon to Brooklyn to Beacon to Brooklyn and back to Beacon and never got the chance to work on it. I never want to move it or look at it again. It better sell. I haven’t figured out a price yet but $175 has a nice ring to it.

Here’s the before picture. Snow on the ground was from last winter.

I’ve discovered that people like bright, shiny objects. Well, you can’t get much brighter than this fluorescent orange side table. Lucky for me, someone had already primed it by the time I found it. Sweet. Hope they did a good job. I’m going to add some gold details, but the paint was still wet when I shot this.

I am F*in loving this piece! I had this roll of vintage vinyl wallpaper that I couldn’t sell. I don’t know why….I think it’s really cool! Anyway, I had matching paint in the house. What could be easier? Perhaps if I coated it with poly instead of resin, that would’ve been easier. I have to figure out a way to leave the cat hair out next time. No way this will be ready for tomorrow. The resin is still sticky and as you can see, I haven’t even finished painting yet. It’s just a test to get an idea of what it will look like. The entire bottom bit will be green. I wish I had remembered to take a before shot, but it was all poop brown.

I sold a bed with the same color scheme over the summer. I call it my “cartoon line”. Not really, but the bright colors do look cartoonish to me.

Dumbo Pop Up Market launches tomorrow and runs for 12 weekends throughout the winter. 76 Front Street.

I joined Twitter months ago, but never really used it until recently. Since it takes me way too long to come up with blog post topics, I thought I should take advantage of Twitter, so I started following a bunch of blogs.

Here’s what’s up wit dat:

nyc-city-hall.jpg

City Room reports there’s no more space to watch the inauguration at City Hall. Well, I didn’t even know that was an option! Now that I know I can’t do it, I really want to. I tried writing to my congressman and senators for tickets, I tried volunteering. Nobody will have me. Hey, is anyone going to D.C.? Anyone doing anything good? Invite me. Please?

Kitsch Designs is collecting and selling vintage graphics. I LOVE that 70’s card! She says it’s 60’s but I want to believe it’s the 70’s. It just brings me back to my childhood. Not that I was a groovy teen chick with yellow hair, but….I don’t know….it just does, ok? Anyway, it’s $5 on Artfire. I think they charge more than that for crappy new Hallmark cards these days.

chx.jpg

Peta lists the top eight vegetarian restaurants in the country and Candle 79 tops the list. I wouldn’t know. I never ate there. The one time we tried to go… We were in the neighborhood, it was raining, we were wet, cold and hungry and just wanted a nice warm place to dry up and dine. We didn’t have reservations and they turned us away. The place was empty, so I’m thinking they didn’t want us there because we looked like bums. Screw ’em! Who needs them?

Artfire says it’s not too soon to get ready for Valentine’s Day. Yes, Yes it is! What do you want from us? We just went through HalloweenThanksgivChrismukaNewYear and now you’re talking Valentine’s? Come on, man! Give us a break! And then it’s gonna be St. Patrick’s. Stop the insanity!

energizercharge-ed023.jpg

Inhabitat twitted about the new Energizer solar battery charger. It will be available this summer for $49.99. FYI, I’ll only use Energizer AA’s on photo shoots. And if you don’t have rechargeable, the lithium are superb! No, I don’t know how bad that is for the environment, but it beats my flash losing power in the middle of a wedding ceremony.

Dayam! Those are some mighty fine looking tiles!

Way back in July of ’08, I did a post on encaustic tile. Fast forward to two days ago when I received a comment from Concrete Cottage on the latest installation photos uploaded to their site.

It’s a great step by step guide for those of you wanting to try this at home. Caution: Grab a tissue to wipe the drool from your keyboard.

The NY Daily News did an article yesterday on Brooklyn Flea’s Winter Pop Up Dumbo market. The online post gave mention to a few vendors, but ’twas the Brooklyn section of the print edition that had the photos I’ll be sending off to Mom.

The Dumbo market will be less flea/more vintage shop. In other words, we won’t be showing as much “junk”.

I’m pretty happy about the free publicity, but I’m still trying to figure out if I’m going senile or if the reporter made a mistake. It states that I’ve been renovating my Bed Stuy brownstone since 2002. Come on, now…. We’re not THAT pathetic! We bought the place at the end of 2005. We’ve been living in construction zones since 1994, but it wasn’t all one house.

Anyway, cool article.

The market begins this weekend and will go until the end of March. As it stands now, Reclaimed Home will be participating on January 24/25 and a few weekends after that. Check out the Flea Blog for more info on all vendors.

Recycling Trees, Computers and More

Ok, New Years is over. If your tree is still up, you’re looking pretty pathetic right about now. Curbside tree recycling started yesterday, January 5th and runs until the 16th. Go to the Department of Sanitation website to see guidelines.

On January 10th and 11th, the Parks Department will hold the 2009 Mulchfest. You can bring your tree to a designated park in any of the five boros. Bring bags for your free mulch!

Tekserve and the Lower East Side Ecology Center are hosting a Recycling Technology Drive this Saturday, the 10th. Bring all non-working electronics over to Tekserve. For all you non-Mac folks, that’s 119 W. 23rd. All participants will receive coupons for Mac products and may register for a raffle.

The site lists acceptable items for recycling. If you have working electronics, here’s a donation list.

If you’re sprucing up your place and getting rid of old furniture, the Department of Sanitation will collect up to six items from one address. All you have to do is put it out the night before. However! We’re talking recycling here, correct? Easiest thing to do is post a curb alert on Craigs. That sh*t will be gone before you know it and it will make someone very happy. And don’t forget about NYC Stuff Exchange or any other used material donation center. Great list at Wastele$$.

I should add that after all my research, I see that Sustainable Flatbush has a handy recycling calendar. Note to self: Bookmark it.

Renovation Therapy is holding an online auction to benefit homeless San Fransisco teen Katy Hughes. No, she’s not some loser who ran away from home and has money to dye her hair and get piercings but still begs on the street. Check out the auction and video.

The Polar Bears didn’t jump into the freezing cold water in the middle of the frigid winter just for the fun of it (Well, maybe some did). They were collecting donations for Camp Sunshine. There will be other polar dips coming up on the east coast. You can donate to a specific event or sign up to take the plunge yourself at Freezin’ for a Reason. There’s a “chicken dip” for those only willing to get their feet wet.

While we’re on the subject of doing nutty things for charity, if you raise $500 towards a charity of your choice, you can Skydive for Free.  There is a list of wonderful organizations to choose from. What I personally like about the list is that I don’t have to worry about animal testing with any of these organizations. The other thing I like about this is that skydiving is an incredible sport, but it’s close to $200 for a tandem jump. There are drop zones on Long Island and Upstate, NY. Look for me to do this in the spring. Free jump? For charity? I’m there!

Homeless Chateau

Artist James Westwater, who does the Plywood Chateaux, has created a “Homeless Chateau”. I thought it might be insulting to the homeless and their advocates to write this post the same day I link to the story of a homeless teen. The Homeless Chateau is, at the moment, a work of art and not an actual shelter. It’s conceivable though, that it could be used for the homeless.

I asked James if this is just art for art’s sake. Here’s his response:

“The main question I have always had, and was recently raised by a blogger on Core77, is should I do this “for real.”  He seems to think yes.  But according to Kevin–The Homeless Guy–Barbieux, (sort of a technical adviser on the project) the issue is not finding people to design and build solo shelters, but convincing municipalities to allow them.

The Homeless Chateau is conceived as an indoor shelter, so, in theory, just needs a willing landlord with an unused space.  On the other other hand, this could be tough sell, due to the mental illness, alcoholism and other chemical dependencies that often accompany homelessness, not to mention fire regulations and such.”

I asked if proceeds of his sales would go to the homeless and his reply was “Proceeds?  That would imply sales, darling.” Ok, fair enough.

Homeless Chateau, 2008, is a prefab one person living module, measuring approximately 4 x 8 x 4 feet and made from FSC certified and recycled materials. It can be knocked down, transported flat, and erected  once again with just a screwdriver. It’s fully self-contained, including a bed, cooking facilities and a toilet . I believe that porta-potty has been recycled from the renovation of James’ home.

Beacon Artist” is the spankin’ brand new Westwater blog.

Happy 2009! I’m thankful I didn’t poop out of the annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear swim in Coney Island. I didn’t get there last year and 2008 was pretty sucky. The event gets more crowded every year and it’s becoming a bit of a hipster happening, spilling over from the Mermaid Parade. But I’m just an old kvetch. What do I know?

Anyway, lots of photos on Flickr. Here are my favorites.

Why is Brooklyn Badass?

Why is Brooklyn Badass? published on 3 Comments on Why is Brooklyn Badass?

 me.jpg

Me at Coney or Nellie Bly. I know…I’m adorable.

Fucked in Park Slope was inspired by NY Magazine’s “Reasons to Love NY” and wanted to do their own version on Brooklyn. Why is Brooklyn so badass? Here are my reasons:

1. Stoops! I loves to bullshit. What better pastime is there than hanging on my stoop shooting the breeze with my neighbors?

2. Eccentrics! The big scary looking dude with the fuzzy bunny slippers. The woman with no teeth who’s always smiling. The guy who tells worst jokes in the world but makes me laugh anyway.

3. Coney Island! Astroland may be gone, but Coney Island is a state of mind. Coney. Brighton. This is REAL Brooklyn. See “Eccentrics”.

4. Diners! Forget Starbucks and trendy coffee houses. Sit for hours, listen to the jukebox in your booth, have 10 cups of coffee and tawk to real New Yawkers.

5. Food Delivery! I’ve come to appreciate this more since I spend much of my time upstate. Pick up the phone. Get a meal. It’s something I took for granted all those years.

6. Bargains! Flea markets. Architectural salvage. Ikea. Weisman’s on McDonald. Domsey’s on Broadway.

7. Sahadi’s! I’m not throwing this into a “Grocery” category. Sahadi’s is in a class of it’s own. It’s that good.

8. The Brooklyn Museum! Second only to The Met. Well, maybe The Met and MOMA. But then it’s definitely third to none!

9. Prospect Park! I think I would enjoy it even if I didn’t have dogs, but my dogs asked me to include it because they LOVE going.

10. It’s my home! No matter where I roam. No matter where I live. I AM Brooklyn and you can take the girl out but….you know. My friends and family are (mostly) still there. It’s where I grew up and where my heart remains.

I check my Craig’s every morning looking for that Basquiat someone is selling for $15. There’s always some funny stuff listed, like waterlogged cigarettes or half used soap. But today I saw something that I just had to pass along.

It’s real estate in Putnam Valley, listed under “general”. $1600 will buy you and your loved one your eternal resting place. Yes, my friends, you can now buy cemetery plots on Craigs. Act now…it’s discounted!
