Yesterday was opening day 2009 of the Elephant’s Trunk Flea Market in New Milford, CT. I had heard so much about it from other dealers, but I never had a chance to get there myself.

My girlfriends and I trekked over from Beacon. Our first impression was that it was smaller than we had thought. We all agreed that it was no Stormville. But still, there was plenty to see and we spent the entire afternoon. Oh yeah, about the afternoon….this is an early market! Vendors start setting up about 5am and people are there with flashlights looking through their trucks. I know this from hearsay as I was in bed at 5am. We didn’t arrive until 11am when the booths looked fairly picked through. By 1pm, vendors were starting to pack up.

I was a bit shocked by some of the prices. I saw tschotckes there for $20 and up that I would be selling for $5. The fact is that vintage and antique prices have come down quite a bit due to the recession. It’s like nobody told some of these vendors. Hey, more power to them if people are still paying these prices! Personally, I think you can find better bargains at the Brooklyn Flea, but maybe I’m a bit partial.

Not everything was overpriced. There were deals to be had, especially towards the end of the day. We picked up a kick ass velvet painting of a dog for $5. The ultimate in kitsch decor! My friend bought a lovely shabby chic Victorian dresser for $50.

My best find of the day was the skeeball! I didn’t get a deal on this, although I tried my darnedest. But it was too cool to pass up. 1910 from Asbury Park. I shall try to sell it, but if I don’t get the $325 I need, it’s going to find a new life as a hall tree in my Bed Stuy brownstone. Picture some shelves, some hooks….not a bad little find.

New Blogging Toy: Flip Mino HD

New Blogging Toy: Flip Mino HD published on

I know I promised I’d shoot some “Old NY Jews Down in Florida” footage with my latest gadget, the Flip Mino HD, but it all came out sucky. This is the best footage I got so far and that’s not saying much.My whole reason for “needing” the Flip is this blog. I’d really like to do some DIY videos if we ever start working on the houses again in this lifetime. The camera is pocket sized and easy to upload. Just “flip” the USB out and plug it into your laptop. The quality is fine for online presentation.

So what are my grievances? Well, I pretty much cover them in this video “review”. The lens isn’t wide enough! You really have to stand far back to take in the scene…or even just one person. Which brings me to the voice. You really have to be on top of someone to get clear sound. Such is the irony of the Flip.

I shouldn’t complain. Honestly, it’s a great camera for just over $200. I’m just used to professional still camera equipment where I can control everything and this is like the point and shoot of video cameras.

Take a vote. Will this become my new blogging tool or will it sit in my purse getting scratched up?

New Toy: Makita Driver Drill

Ladies, don’t be jealous! My husband came home the other day with a gift for me. A Makita cordless driver drill. He let me play with it for like 5 seconds and now I can’t seem to find it. Hmm, if I didn’t know any better…

So what makes the 18V Lithium Ion so great? Well, I think my old Dewalt (can’t find that either) is only 14V and much heavier because it isn’t lithium. It’s quicker to charge this battery and it holds the charge better. The drill weighs only 4.1 pounds and the ergonomic shape doesn’t hurt my drillin’ elbow either while the motor delivers 450 lbs of torque.

But best of all? It’s got a cute little light to illuminate the work area. Ah, there’s a sucker born every minute!

Craig and Yvonne’s Victorian home is up for sale! I read about it on Brownstoner, of all places, a Brooklyn centric blog. I have a love/hate relationship with Craig and Yvonne even though I’ve never met them. I’m just sooo damn jealous that they have such a beautiful home that they’ve actually finished. Finished?! That’s unheard of in my world!

The Fanwood, NJ house is listed at $799k with Burgdorff Realtors. The 1875 six bedroom single family sits on 0.35 acres with taxes listed at $11,633. The restoration is friggin impeccable! Go to their website and check out the before and afters. These people are mad! Mad, I tell ya!!

I’d move to NJ for this. Who’s buying?

  • Sink vanity. Listed at $1200. I want it gone!

Out with the old, in with the new! It’s time to get ready for the Brooklyn Flea in Ft Greene. The outdoor market starts on April 18th. I do not, repeat, do not want to go out there with last year’s inventory. So, I’m having a virtual stoop sale. A “Make Me An Offer Sale”.

  • OMG, this is taking up half my storage space. It’s down to $195. What do you want to give me??

Check out the Reclaimed Home shop and pay no attention to the prices. I’m willing to come down big time on larger pieces especially, as they’re taking up the most space. The longer I’ve had it around, the less I’ll take.

You can also spend hours looking through old Flickr photos. Much of that has been sold, but I still have some pieces that were never uploaded to the store. So have fun with that!

Artwork and restored furniture is not as negotiable, but you can certainly try. I won’t be insulted by any offer. The worst that can happen is I’ll tell you to fek off.

You may even get local delivery out of me if you take lots of stuff or don’t bargain me down too much. We’ll see.

I had every intention of going to the Architectural Digest Home Design Show over the weekend but it was not in the cards. I had a pre-implant tooth extraction gone bad on Thursday (I won’t go into the gory details) that knocked me out for the entire weekend. I don’t think it was the 2 hour dental surgery that did it, I believe it was all the drugs I was on afterward. I was hopped up like Neely O’Hara popping the dolls and I finally got permission from my dentist yesterday to stop everything. I’m feeling a lot better now, thank you.

Oh yeah, so anyway, I missed the Design Show. I only remembered that I missed it when I looked at 3 Rings this morning. They win my award for best write up. And check Get Back Inc. Can I want everything they have?

Lighting Countertops

Lighting Countertops published on 2 Comments on Lighting Countertops

Web Urbanist recently featured ten of the coolest counter and surface material designs. Although they’re all really beautiful, I noticed that the more spectacular ones are lit from behind.

So my question is, do you really need to spend a fortune on semi precious gemstones or lava to get that same glowing effect? Sure, if you have the money, be my guest (and loan me some). But I’m thinking that you can probably achieve a very cool effect by backlighting just about anything.

Some ideas:

1. Colored glass or plexi

2. Individual glass marbles, tiles or quartz stones

3. Transparent paint for glass

4. Stained glass

5. Embedded anything in resin

6. Punched metal

7. Old photographic transparencies

8. Strings of Christmas lights under clear glass

Now obviously if these are surfaces where water will penetrate, you’ll need to protect them. Do I even have to mention that any paint, holey metal or photo should be underneath the glass? And if it’s a countertop, make sure you’ve checked into heat, breakage and seams? But you knew that already, right?

The lighting is something that can be adjusted. You may not want it evenly lit. Perhaps some shadow areas would give a more dramatic effect. Just make sure you have your wiring and spacial issues worked out in advance! Keep in mind that lighting from behind will take up at least a couple inches, and that’s some narrow lighting I’m talking about.
