I emailed invitations and posted it to the Brooklyn Blogade Google group, but I never posted it here. Wow, I’m losing it.

Reclaimed Home is hosting the rolling Brooklyn Blogade on June 28 @ 11am. It will be at Kush in Clinton Hill, hopefully in the lovely back yard.

There are usually themes and/or guest speakers for such meetings, but guess who hasn’t gotten her act together yet? Morgan of Save Bedford Stuyvesant may co-host with me IF he can wake up early enough that Sunday. I’ve also asked my web designer, Veronica of Nose Round Productions, to speak.  She always has her pulse on the next big thang since she’s only a 20 something.

At any rate, it will be good company and good food. Wanna come? RSVP here. If you already did, I got it.

Outdoor Summer Concerts

It finally feels like Spring today and I’m looking forward to some outdoor fun. What beats seeing your favorite band live minus the smell of sweat, stale beer and smoke? Nuthin’, I tell ya!

Jones Beach is such a great venue for a show. We caught Depeche Mode there a few years ago and I’m still raving about it. The seating and acoustics are above average and the ocean breeze is unbeatable. This year they have Kid Rock and New Kids on the Block, Aerosmith with ZZ Top, some heavy metal and a splash of pop. Although Blink 182 is the only concert I’d travel to Long Island for, the line up isn’t bad…No Doubt, Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction. Eh.

Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park bandshell is F-R-E-E, with a suggested admission of just $ 3. Some of the shows are benefits and require a $30 ticket purchase. We paid thirty bucks one year to see Cake and Flaming Lips in the rain and were peeved that people parked themselves just outside the fence and saw the same concert for free. Anyway, they were worth the ticket price. Here’s what you do. Bring a picnic. Hang out. Cheap, awesome evening. Some 2009 performers: David Byrne, TV on the Radio, Burning Spear, Buckwheat Zydeco and Big Daddy Kane.

Central Park SummerStage has an eclectic selection of performances ranging from spoken word to comedy dance to music. A Ziggy Marley benefit concert is sold out, as is TV on the Radio. Josh Ritter with NY Pops is playing, so is Matisyahu and Q Tip.

You’ll have to download the PDF to see the River to River Festival event calendar. There’s some folk, ballet and movies going on. The one that caught my eye is The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 on July 13th. The original! That is one of the best NYC movies of all time!

The Seaside Concerts in Coney Island isn’t updated with the 2009 schedule, but keep an eye on those. There’s always something wonderful at the Seaside.

McCarren Park still has the 2008 schedule up, which I just got excited about until I realized this is 2009.

Yay, let’s go to the dump!

Yesterday was the first day of my week off to renovate a room (and clean the house). I ended up tweeting/twittering/twitting my every move, which was a good idea, because it kept me honest. No long lunch breaks. No chatting on the phone. I worked my ass off. Ok, maybe I spent too much time buying caulk…running into a couple of people and chatting up a storm. Hey, errands are my social life these days! It beats talking to myself and dancing alone to my ipod.

Ok, so where did I get to? Doesn’t look like much, but it’s all in the prep work. I had to sand the pre-sanded floor, mask moulding, chase cracks, vaccuum, plaster said cracks, caulk seams and screws and load the van to go to the dump.

The wall will need a second coat of plaster today, so no painting. The floors will need to be hit with caulk again as it shrinks when it dries. That can be primed in the afternoon. I forgot I also have to paint the radiator that’s sitting on a dolly in the dining room.

And here I was thinking this was a weekend project.

Thought I’d get away without priming the walls. Ha!

When Cats Go Bad

If only the internet had smellorama

We have six cats, three of whom have chronic urinary infections. They are on special diets for the rest of their lives and they’re happy enough. The problem is, they just. won’t. use. the. litterbox. Hence, we have the Cat Pee House.

As we’ve done with renovations past, (we’ve always had a multiple cat household) we will embark on getting rid of the pee smell this week. That means nothing less than ripping up the floor.

Don’t be sad for us. If the floor was in salvageable condition, we wouldn’t have let it get this far. She was a great old floor, she was. Old long strips, probably installed around the 40’s or earlier. But there wasn’t any life left in her. She was sanded so many times that the tongue and grooves were starting to show. She didn’t have another sanding left in her.

And so we took up the floor. Then discovered the subfloor was destroyed. Ok, now you can start feeling bad for us. That looked to be in decent shape in some areas, but we’re not sure all the damage was caused by our cats. We left the original lower subfloor in, even though it got hit with the pee too.

So, here’s the plan….

This is a temporary solution until we rebuild the garage, adding a causeway to the house. That will be the new cat friendly area. At the rate things are going, all of our cats will be dead by then and we just may be also.

Anyway, plywood. That’s it. We put down tar paper underneath to protect the already peed on subfloor. This week I’ll be caulking, painting and sealing it. And of course, why not repair plaster and paint the entire room while I’m at it?

As with past deadlines, there’s a reason we’re rushing to do this now. Ah, the old house guests! The only time we ever finish projects. So this week, this blog will look like a real “renovation blog” as I chart my progress. Because I won’t have time to come up with any other kind of post.

This isn’t all cat pee. We soaked it in Nature’s Miracle before deciding to tear it out anyway.

The dogs were mostly responsible for the damaged door.

It took us an entire weekend (hubby alone on Saturday) to rip up 2 layers of flooring and install plywood.

Everything is in the dining room now. Including the dust.

Jenny and David are moving back to the city.

The couple bought the Kripplebush Bed and Breakfast in Stone Ridge, NY nearly 10 years ago. They restored the home and made it their own. Jenny and David were married there (I was their wedding photographer), held concerts and had a baby.

Ideally, they would love to rent the house on a full time basis for $2500 per month, but they are open to vacation rentals. My husband and I stayed there long before we met Jenny and David, back when an older woman named Abby ran the Kripplebush B&B. It’s a charming old home on beautiful property, close to all of those awesome restaurants in the StoneFallsEndale area.

The 4 bedroom, 3 bath house sits on 1 acre including a creek, with another two acres across the street. I adore the restoration! They updated the house by enhancing the historic detail with a modern twist. The red kitchen cabinets! The tin ceiling! The colorful molding! There’s a music room AND a yoga studio. Now, I’m not a musician and I don’t really do yoga, but who cares? I want.

If you decide to rent the place and it’s too large for you, I might have some free weekends available. Please do not hesitate to ask. You pay, cook and clean in return for the pleasure of my company.

Wanna Buy a Diner in Beacon?

Located in one of the fugliest buildings in the town of Beacon is Quinn’s Luncheonette. Or is that Quin’s? I photographed it on Tuesday as it has been put on the market.Newcomers and old timers alike eat there. I’ve been only once and it certainly did live up to my greasy spoon expectations.

But I’m not here to critique the food. I’m here to get someone to buy this joint and open an awesome vegetarian diner (that delivers!) right here in Beacon. Any takers?

If I owned this restaurant, I think I’d have to leave the interior intact. You can’t get any better than this! It’s sooo mid century chic. Or is it 80’s? I can’t tell, but whatever it is, it’s interesting. It’s listed at $399k.

That’s about all the details I have for now. Give me a shout if you’re interested and I’ll let you know who to talk to at Jon Car Realty.

Last week I posted Mario’s Estate Sale. Due to weather and personal issues, they put the sale off until this Saturday. So, if you didn’t make it, you have a second chance!

Here’s some cut and paste…..”If you’re heading north for the weekend, Mario of those Mario and Reclaimed Home estate sales is holding a tag sale at his house in Beacon. He’s partnering up with Iron Fish Mark this time, who just closed his eclectic vintage/antiques shop on Main Street. They have tons of goodies filling up the 2 story garage space. And Mario always prices things to SELL! It’s at 69 Verplanck, this Saturday. Rain date is May 16.”

Our House in the Middle of Our Street

During the late 30’s/early 40’s, the city photographed every house in every borough for tax purposes. They did this again in the mid 80’s. Prints are available for purchase from NYC. gov. Prices start at $35 for a black and white 8×10 from the 40’s.

My house didn’t look all that different than it does today, although the 1940’s row of houses almost look like dirty limestones rather than brownstones. Unfortunately, someone along the way painted my home brown, so it’s lacking some authenticity. Oh, it’s under there, but who can afford to restore the exterior? I can’t.

The front doors can easily be replaced by salvaged ones, but the stair rails will be pricey to put back. It is something we’d like to do if we have some spare dough. We definitely have to redo the stoop and it would make sense to take care of both at the same time. We may end up with something not totally original, but nicer than what’s there.

I ordered the print to incorporate into my top secret project that will be revealed soon. Ok, it’s a counter top. The print is scanned for embedding in resin along with a few other items from the house and the original will hang on the wall.

Below is a snappie I took in 2005 before we closed on the house.

I’m kinda curious about the 80’s shot now.

Finally got over to Film Biz Recycling in Long Island City. It was sooooo worth the trip!

Ok, here’s the rundown. Eva Radke founded the business a couple of years ago when she got pissed off about all the film props being thrown into dumpsters. The non profit company takes donations from production sets and resells or rents the items. The 2nd floor warehouse is chock full of tschotskes, small furniture and crazy cool stuff such as reproduction 1970’s toilet paper and fake street signs.

I came back with half a van full of goodies that included a child’s table and chair set, coffee table, wicker hamper and tons of smalls.

If you need to furnish your house, decorate it or get linens and kitchen supplies, this is the place to go!

You either got the salvage bug or you don’t. When I was doing the flea market on Saturday, some guy came around with a piece of wide plank tongue and groove molding. A sample of a room full of the stuff that he’s giving away for free! It’s 3/4″ thick pine, detail on the front and I figure it can be used as a floor if you installed it face down.

Let me reiterate. Antique wide plank. Free. It made my day! My flea neighbor Amy was all like “Dude, why are you getting excited over a piece of moldy old board with nails in it?”

Some people just don’t get it.

Including my husband. We’re passing on the board which I wanted for our deck, because he says pine won’t hold up outdoors. I wish we had a room that needed flooring, but we’re running out of major interior restoration work at the moment. So if anyone wants this, the guy has it in front of his house in Ditmas now. I don’t want to post his phone # and address, so let me know.

Oh, and he also has a clawfoot tub. Hel-lo!

Flatbush Gardener’s panorama. I’m totally jealous of this shot.

After thorough planning on the part of Louise “OTBKB” Crawford, Eleanor “Creative Times” Traubman and countless others, the 2009 Blogfest went off without a hitch. The large space at Dumbo’s Powerhouse Arena seemed more intimate than last year’s Lyceum and the format flowed better, IMHO.

There were some kick ass videos presented by Adrian “Brit in Brooklyn” Kinloch and Blue Barn Pictures. The evening was dedicated to Bob “Gowanus Lounge” Guskind. Flatbush “A Year in the Park” Brenda introduced a video tribute to the blogger who died earlier this year.

“Blogs of a Feather” was introduced at last night’s event. This is a small break out session of like minded bloggers. I co-hosted the house/food/crafts section with Janah of Eat It. We had a great group that included Alana of The Roux, Ann of Open Spaces Feng Shui , Ameet of Rice of Life and Melissa of Fork This.

I was psyched that Casa Cara and Vanessa of Etsy, joined in, because I’m a big fan of both of their blogs. We hung out for a bit at the after party.

Professional organizer Amanda Wiss of Urban Clarity also joined us. She was great, but it made me a little uneasy, sort of like having a psychiatrist around when you know you’re totally nuts. I could’ve sworn Amanda was frowning upon me when I announced I didn’t bring business cards. Maybe I’m just being paranoid.

We met would be blogger, Sylvia, who is thinking of starting a DIY crafts blog specific to Brooklyn. Hope she does!

Next Brooklyn blogger meet up is on a much smaller scale. Reclaimed Home is hosting the June Blogade at Kush on June 28th. Mark your calendars!
