Whiner and Diner:Why Didn’t I Think of That?

Sometimes I’m really impressed by things that are incredibly ingenious and other times it just aggravates me that I didn’t think of it first. Whiner and Diner pisses me off. It should’ve been me! I’m the one with an 8 pet household! I’m the one who makes reclaimed sh*t! Perhaps it’s because these brilliant pet accessories are made from wine cases. We can never buy wine by the case for fear of drinking it all at once. We’re a 1 bottle at a time household.

The pet beds and toy boxes are pretty straightforward. The beds are $225, which is semi affordable for the non DIY crew. (?) Ok, if you can’t spend the $225, just throw a damn pillow in a box. Viola!

But it’s the pet feeders that stole my heart. Singles start at $150 and doubles at $175. You can choose from stain colors or hand painted designs. I love them!
Damn you, Whiner and Diner!

NYC Dog Runs

NYC Dog Runs published on

We feel guilty when we bring the dogs to Brooklyn. Sure, they would rather be sitting in the house there with us than sitting alone in Beacon, but they don’t get great walks in Bed Stuy. When we lived near Prospect Park we took full advantage of the doggy circle until Frida, the anti social Pitbull came into our lives. Oh, she was social alright! She just played too rough and it always turned into a fight.

Now that we have two social dogs we can give this dog run thing another shot. Last weekend we thought we might bring them to Prospect Park, but we didn’t feel like schlepping them over there. They never got off leash that day, but on the way to Home Depot we did notice a local dog run on at Herbert Von King Park (formerly Tompkins Park).

So, it got me thinking. Where are the dog runs in New York? Well, I’m not going to post the list here because there are so many, but here are some links so you can search your own neighborhood.

And if you don’t have a dog, check this out.

The Parks Department has the most comprehensive list of runs and off leash park rules in all 5 boros.

Lawyer Joel Zand has a list of dog runs as well as information on pet laws in NYC. He’s a dog lawyer!

Cat Genie: I’ll Take Six Please!

Cat Genie: I’ll Take Six Please! published on

I’m a total sucker for stupid new pet products that I use for about a week. I might have to try the Cat Genie. For the low, low price of 300 bucks, I can own a litter box that flushes! But wait! There’s more. It cleans itself too! Do you know how much time I spend changing litter? Since I have 5 boxes in the house for 6 cats who pee on the floor anyway, does that mean I need 6 Genies? Sooo, what do you think? Dumb or ingenious idea?

I can’t remember a time in my life that I didn’t have a pet (or several) in my home. My mother and I took in cats when I was young. My brother was more of a turtle, tarantula, iguana type of guy. Interesting…he’s still alittle, um, “eccentric”. When I travel without my pets I miss them terribly. And if there’s a cat or dog at the place I’m staying, I tend to temporarily adopt them.

Now there’s hope for people like me. No, it’s not “Animal Rescuers Anonymous”. It’s Flexpet. People who don’t have time to care for a full time pet can rent a companion when they need to. The trained and healthy rescue dogs are between 3-5 years of age and can be adopted if you’ve fallen in love. Membership of $279.95 contributes towards full care of all the dogs. Steep, I know, but that’s one visit to the vet for me.

The “Canine Ambassador Program” is offered to hospitality businesses. Hotels can have dogs meet, greet and walk with folks like me who get lonely on vacation.

Flexpet has locations in NYC and LA and has many other cities in the works, both in the US and abroad.

Mother in law with allergies coming to visit? Rent a pet! Need a pick up aide? Rent a dog! Want to push out annoying roommates or tenants? Rent a loud yappy mutt!

$6000 Dog Caves

$6000 Dog Caves published on

Scottie’s Fine Art Caves is a Canadian design/build firm that specializeds in Interior Art Homes for companion animals.

If you haven’t already guessed, Scottie is a dog. The 12 year old Maltese/Yorkshire terrier is CEO of the company. Scottie was the inspiration behind the cave homes, so why not? The VP of the company is a cat. Some guy is also involved.

The Art Homes are stamped for authenticity. I can’t imagine what the resale value would be after sitting in a house full of chewing dogs and scratchy, peeing cats.

The Caves are made with environmentally friendly materials. Ingredients include water, cellulose fibre, wood, natural fibre rope, and water-based paints. These are meant for interior use only. But then again, who in their right mind would keep a $6000 object outdoors? Or their dog for that matter?

Options for the Lazy Pet Owner

poochpotty.jpg

Solutions for the busy pet owner! Sounds better than “lazy pet owner”. Pooch Potty claims to be the orginal dog potty…in business since 1994. This product requires real sod that needs to be replaced once a week. It is not meant to replace exercising Astro regularly, but we’ll get to that shortly. The company gives a helpful tip: “Many customers who are too busy to clean their Pooch Potty boxes will ask their housekeepers or dogwalkers to do it for them.” If you have a dogwalker, why would you need to….? Ok, if you’re too busy to walk your dog AND too busy to clean up the indoor potty, maybe it’s time to consider getting a fish instead.

dogtreadmill.jpg

Here we go. Let your dog poop on the sod then exercise him/her on the treadmill. No need for you to leave the house! I’m wondering if I can fit my fat ass on this along with my dog. It might get more use than my Elliptical/Clothes Dryer sitting in my office.

poopfreeze.jpeg

If you haven’t seen “Envy” with Ben Stiller and Jack Black, please, I urge you to at least click on this link. It’s the “VaPOOrizer“! Poop Freeze is an aerosol freeze spray that, upon contact, forms a frosty film on dog or cat poop to harden the surface for easy pick-up. The company maintains it’s an environmentally friendly product. But it’s an aerosol. Hel-lo?

Anyway, here’s what you do. Set yourself up with the sod and the treadmill. When the dog goes, just freeze it so you don’t even have to pick it up. Get yourself one of those timed feeding bowls and you’re set for days!

Let’s forget for a moment that WowBow is located in London and the dog bed pictured here is £ 899. Call it simply a unique design, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that they understand pets.

I’m tired of seeing corrugated cardboard and carpeted cat trees. They don’t last! You cannot clean them! Do you know how disgusting my kitty condo is? It’s been scratched up, puked on and peed on over the years. It’s a wasteful object. Something that gets discarded when it becomes too gross.

Lucite. That’s the stuff. You can clean it and change the sisal or bedding. I know that plastic has a tendency to scratch, but I can’t see the cats wanting to claw away at it.

Who came up with corrugated cardboard for cats anyway? What’s with that?

I didn’t want to bring you down with our sad news, but 3 weeks ago, we lost our wonderful 12 year old Pit, Frida. I’m so not ready to “replace” her, but our 3 year old, Lola looks like she’s in need of a companion. So I started looking. And I found this on Craigs. Oy.

I’ve been in contact with the woman who brought her to the shelter. She is pulling her out and we agreed to have her meet our Lola. Now we find out the dog has kennel cough. The woman can’t keep the dog in her house since she has one of those mean yappy little mutts, so she’s keeping her in the office.

We would still like to take this dog if she gets along with Lola and our cats. Word is she’s a sweetheart, so we don’t think it will be a problem.

Anyone out there willing to foster a pup with kennel cough?

Oh, and she might not be house trained.

Ever say “Darn, I wish my dog’s bed harmonized with the rest of my Mid Century Modern furnishings.” Well, now Tinkerbell AND Mr. Bigglesworth can have their very own Wright inspired home.

Pre-Fab-Pets is a brand new company based in San Diego.

The Architectura, pictured above, is available in small, medium and large. Only the large size is sealed for outdoors. What’s with that? So you can kick your big dogs out of the house but let those little yappy rats have all the fun?

Three other bed designs are available: The Dog Day Bed, Bent (I like that one!) and Zen. Prices start at $149 for the small Zen bed and top out at $999 for the large Architectura. Items are only available on the Pre-Fab-Pets website at the moment.

We’ve all seen them. Some of us have been unable to resist taking them in. My friend SS was one of those compassionate suckers. She and her tenant took in 7 kittens, all with bad eye infections and a few of them already blind. They’re nursing them back to health, but obviously cannot keep all of them. They would like to place them in wonderful homes. The above photo is the best one she was able to capture (I’ll leave my photo critique out). I’ll have her leave contact info in the comments and/or on the forum.

It prompted me to write this post because it breaks my heart that I can’t take in each and every stray I see in Bed Stuy. We ended up with 2 new cats since buying that house, bringing our total up to 6. There are so many on the streets there, eating from the garbage, getting hit by cars and getting diseases.

If you have feral cats living in your backyard, there are some things you can do even if you cannot house them. The city has a number of animal rescue programs which help folks trap, spay and/or neuter wild cats and release them back to the streets. They won’t have a home, but at least it will stop them from reproducing.

Please see the links below for workshops on trapping, low cost spay/neuter, private rescuers and no kill shelters.

And check out this poor bastard’s blog. Little does he know he’s going to get attached and keep every one of those cats. Sucka!

Letting Cats Out. Keeping Them Safe

Letting Cats Out. Keeping Them Safe published on 1 Comment on Letting Cats Out. Keeping Them Safe

hueyfence.jpg

Our cats love to go outdoors and we don’t want to deny them that. On the other hand, we live on a busy road and need to keep them safe in the yard. We’ve been using the Cat Fence In System for years and we’ve never had a problem. It’s a very simple design: brackets at an angle the cat can’t jump on, plus netting.

The catch is: You must be diligent about maintenance. The few times our cats got out was because they found holes or tears in the netting that were overlooked. Squirrels can chew their way through and if a cat has something tall nearby to stand on (think: tool shed, tree) they can chew or jump over the netting as well. It’s a good idea to loosen the brackets during the winter (if you’re keeping your cat in) because heavy snow can bend them. You should also keep an eye on the screws because they loosen or rust. In other words: check it often!

Make sure the bottom of your fence is cat proof also. We use mesh where the fence doesn’t meet the soil. As with the netting, this should be check regularly as wild animals often dig holes under fencing.

Keep a close eye on the little rascals the first few times you let them out. Cats are crafty and they will think of things you haven’t!
