I was with my friend Deb Goldstein the day she found out her then 4 year old niece was a celiac. We were driving around Sullivan County looking at bungalow colonies. That was two years ago the day after Valentine’s Day. We never did follow our plan to start a modern bungalow colony but Deb did do something about celiac disease.

Levine’s General Store was a family run business in Ulster County back in the day. Deb’s relatives. She has chosen that name to represent her company that promotes local gluten free foods. There may possibly be a cafe and market in the future but for now, look for some pop-up events.

This month, Levine’s is at Freddy’s Bar in South Slope, serving up gluten free sweets, savories and of course, beer. February 9th, 1-6pm. See you there?

Another year has passed. As I sit here eating my Chinese food leftovers for breakfast, I’ll share with you my reflections of the year that was 2013.

In January, the U.S. wondered what the hell was going to happen with that whole fiscal cliff nonsense. The crisis was averted and/or the can was kicked down the road until a later date. Big drama from whiney babies.

A view of the wall of a local zinc plant which was damaged by a shockwave from a meteor in the Urals city of Chelyabinsk, Russia. In February, Chelyabinsk, Russia was rocked by a 10 ton meteor traveling at about 40,000 miles per hour. Although the asteroid caused over a thousand injuries, luckily nobody was killed.

March brought news of two divisive figures in transition. Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez succumbed to cancer after a long political career. Depending on who you’re talking to, he was either a savior or a dictator. The Vatican also saw a new Argentinian Pope when Francis was inaugurated.

boston

April brought tragedy to the U.S. in the form of the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11. The Boston Marathon bombing brought death, injury and sheer horror, but what played out in the following days was like a bad Hollywood action film.

ramsey

On May 6th, a kidnapping victim named Amanda Berry managed to escape her captor. Neighbor Charles Ramsey became a hero and internet meme that day. Turned out that three women were being held by Ariel Castro, who later committed suicide in prison. Guess he couldn’t take being held captive.

doma

June brought some great news for gay marriage proponents. The Supreme Court ruled DOMA unconstitutional and at the same time, declined to take a stand on California’s Prop 8.

Atlanta Civil Right Activists Organize March In Memory Of Trayvon Martin

On July 13th, George Zimmerman was acquitted for second degree murder and manslaughter for the death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. Although he has yet to kill again, he has been reported to police for domestic abuse and pulling guns on loved ones at least twice since the trial.

Remember that whole Obama threatening Syria and Kerry making some off the cuff comment, then Putin taking him up on it thing? Yeah, that was September 2013.

November. Typhoon Haiyan devastates portions of the Philippines, Vietnam and nearby countries, killing multiple thousands of people and leaving some towns and cities completely destroyed.

December. After countless arguments, scare tactics and hiccups, the Affordable Healthcare Act website is up and running for online applications. I believe the deadline, which has been extended multiple times, was December 23rd, but it’s too confusing to be sure.

festivus

Since we already covered Thanksgivukah, we’re safe to wish our goyishe friends a very Merry Christmas this year. For those celebrating Festivus today, let’s have an airing of the grievances, shall we?

1. How come there are no honest contractors around? Why don’t any of them take pride in their work?

2. People who leave their shopping carts in the middle of the aisle. WTF? Like you are the only ones in the store?

3. If anyone has a husband who actually listens to them, raise your hand. Yeah, I thought not.

4. Bluetooth. I’m tired of trying to figure out whether people are crazy or talking on the phone. I’m also tired of thinking they are talking to me and responding.

5. Hipster or Hick? I can’t tell the difference. They all have beards and flannel shirts. Hicksters. All of ’em.

6. Speaking of hicks, what’s with the Honey Boo Boos and the Duck Folks? Why do people feel the need to watch the lowest common denominator and then complain when they find out they are racist homophobes? As if it’s surprising.

7. People who keep talking or texting when I say I’m busy or trying to sleep. Get a clue.

8. Chronic complainers. Oh wait….

Well, have a good one! See you on Wednesday!

Holiday Crafts for Every Borough

Holiday Crafts for Every Borough published on

AstoriaMarket_V2_460x285

New York doesn’t have a shortage of holiday shopping, whether it be big chain stores or handmade shows. Of course, the crafts markets are our favorite. Here’s one for every borough.

Starting with Brooklyn!

There’s a new show in town. The inaugural Brooklyn Holiday Artisan Market features 20 hand-picked artisans under one roof at The Invisible Dog on Bergen Street. Organized by French Morning, the show is heavy on the Eurocrafts. There are jewelry designers such as Amercan, Debbie Fisher, Japanese schooled potter David Herbstman and the newly opened France Antique Boutique. The show starts this weekend and runs again on Dec. 14/15 and Dec. 21/22.

Manhattan

The Hester Street Fair Holiday Market is already in full swing. It started on December 1st and runs every day until the 21st. No worries about braving the cold. They’ve relocated to an indoor space in Chelsea over at 29th and 6th.

Queens

Astoria Market will be open for shopping on December 15th but their official “Holiday Market” is Dec. 21 and 22. They are located, as always at the Bohemian Hall.

The Bronx

The Bronx Museum is extending a welcome to local artisans during public museum hours on Dec. 14th and 21st. The holiday sale will include photography, paintings, jewelry and pottery. Plus, what better atmosphere than a museum?

Finally, Staten Island

Ok, after searching for about 20 minutes, I couldn’t come up with a single crafts show. Are you from Staten Island? Do you know of something? If so, please list it in the comment section. OMG, there’s a reason nobody likes you, Staten Island.

Nelson Mandela inspired everyone. We can try to write a tribute to the man, but we would only fall short. So instead, we’ll stick to the blog’s theme and have a look at some Mandela inspired creations.

The one thing to keep in mind is that his moving on should not be thought of with sadness.  Nobody lives forever and this man who brought so much positive motion and change into the world, lived to the ripe old age of 95. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Taste of Rockaway

Taste of Rockaway published on

Save the date! Saturday, December 7th marks the first event of the newly formed “Hospitality and Entertainment Association for Restaurants and Taverns of Rockaway Beach”. The Taste of Rockaway one day event is 10 bucks for 10 dining establishments. That’s only a dollar per dish.

These Rockaway eatery owners want everyone to know that they are open for business all year ’round. More importantly, I’ve discovered that the boardwalk restrooms remain open during the winter months as well. An important detail to factor into your day of binge dining and drinking.

There are a limited number of passes that can be purchased in advance at any of the establishments. No time frame set for day of, just enjoy the freedom of using your pass during the business hours of each place.

Go to the event’s website for links to each restaurant.

Head’s up! Don’t go into Prospect Park tomorrow. No cycling. No jogging. Don’t even think of bringing your dog. The park will be off limits from 12-6pm as the president’s helicopter is set to land on the grass. He’ll also be in Crown Heights so expect delays around the area. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

It’s house tour season! This weekend, come check out my neighborhood. The Brownstoners of Bed Stuy have organized their 35th annual tour for this Saturday, October 19th. What makes Bed Stuy so unique in the old home department is that to date, the homeowners have not done extensive renovations, so all of the original details remain. But hurry up! With gentrification, dumpster diving may become more exciting than house touring for all of you lovers of historic materials.

Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. It is advised to go with the advance purchase as these events have sold out in the past.  No online purchase. Click on the image or link to see where you can purchase tix.

If you’re anything like me, you have about four defunct Macbooks sitting in a closet somewhere taking up valuable space. And if you’re anything like me, they’ve been there for years and what I’m about to share with you won’t change that.

But I’ll try.

Hey kids! Gather up your old electronics for the eWaste Recycling program taking place all month throughout the city (mostly Manhattan and Brooklyn with a touch of Queens). You can recycle not only computers but they are taking TV’s, video games, cell phones and “other” as well. Click on the link to see locations and dates.

If you’re a lungeyelander (translation: Long Islander) or live in parts of Queens blessed with LIPA service (and when I say “blessed” I mean “cursed”), you can actually get some bucks for recycling your old appliances. They are paying $50 for each working fridge or freezer including free pick up. No need to deal with Craigslist crazies! $20 voucher for working air conditioners and dehumidifiers as well. There are some guidelines to follow. Click that link to find out!

Check out Grow NYC for swaps and other recycling events. They are da bomb! Do people still say that? What do you want from me? I’m 48 years old.

Photoville is getting ready to pop up for Year II starting tomorrow. If you missed it last year, your loss, but you can catch it this time around. The action packed photography event occupies a huge space at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

What is “Photoville”? It’s a photo exhibit, a classroom, a dog park and a beer garden all rolled into one.

Exhibitions are hung in shipping containers scattered around the site. Sign up in advance for any of the workshops. Have a beer. Get a tintype portrait. Bring your dog.

Eat Fish to Benefit Fish?

I don’t get it. I love the NY Aquarium. Of course I want to see what’s best for them and especially their cute aquatic inhabitants. So, there’s this benefit, right? Sip for the Sea on September 12th.

Here’s the catch (pun intended). The fundraiser is a tasting of sustainable wine and food. SEAFOOD!! Maybe it’s because I’m a crazy animal rights vegetarian, but why serve seafood at a benefit for sea creatures? I guess an aquarium isn’t really benefiting sea creatures but I’d like to think it’s educational and they want the best for our underwater friends.

Am I the only one who thinks this is wrong?

Anyway, click on image above if you want to attend. I’m sure it’s for a good cause. Just let them know that you have a buddy who couldn’t come because there was nothing for her to eat.

Vintage, sweet treats, jewelry, tees at Rockaway Yard Sale. Sounds like a plan! Here’s the full plan. Hit the beach, hit the concessions, hit the yard sale under the dome that will soon be taken down. Come to my house and help me finish up. Wait…do that first. You can have fun after. Just take the A train to Rockaway.
