There’s a new kid in town ready to compete with Etsy. EFreeMe is a freshly launched, easy to navigate, craft and vintage shop that is totally free for sellers (except for the Paypal part). Right now they will also give you $5 if you create a store and list 20 items! Yes, THEY are paying YOU to list!

There aren’t tons of sellers on there yet. The site is brand spankin’ new.

The image above is from Atozillusions. Look at real close, like. It spells out the word “music”. How cool is that?

So, how does EFreeMe make money? No clue.

New Paltz Crafts Show Find

So, remember how I previously mentioned that we are forced to attend the New Paltz Crafts every year and every year it’s the same tired vendors? Tired as in they haven’t updated their work since 1986. Well, we found one new vendor! Woo-hoo!

After running through the show in record time, we came across Bill Finks and his upcycled doll art. Bill and his wife Marcia have a company called Primitive Twig. The website hasn’t been updated in a few years and there is no doll art on display, but it’s cool stuff anyway and has current contact info.

As a craftsperson at a decidedly unhip crafts show, I was curious to find out how Bill was doing. He said he had done well on Saturday! It was still early when I spoke to him on Sunday.

*Editor’s note: Sorry if I’m coming off as snobbish with my “unhip” nonsense. It’s the same country crafts, color animal photographs, dichroic glass jewelry, stoneware pottery and tie dyes I’ve been seeing since the 80’s. They’re a little dated. But then again, the show brings people in who go crazy for stuff like that, so who am I to complain?

Anyway, back the the Reclaimed Home approved vendor….

Bill was telling us that he has tons of the same antique porcelain doll head. They come from Germany and there are so many of them around because the doll maker would throw them out if there was a tiny flaw. They are still being dug up today.

He sometimes gets people dumping their old junk on him (which he gladly accepts) so he can bring new life to it.

Prices were fair. I believe they ranged from the mid fifties to $700 range.

Kitsch is awesome, but kitsch plus pop culture kicks ass! I’m lovin’ these crafty items I found.

The Johnny Cash switch plate is only $8 on Etsy. It’s just the most fabulous photo ever.

elvis.jpg

Once upon a time I found a crocheted Elvis at a tag sale for $7 and sold him at the flea market for $120. I still regret letting him go. If you can crochet, here’s a pattern for ya!

As if the thought of Adam Lambert isn’t horrific enough, check out this scary embroidered portrait. There’s a how-to on the Craftster forum if you must have one.

Um, maybe I should have titled this post “Scary Celebrity Crafts”.  Zombie M.J. and E.T. Did they have a thing? It’s a spray paint stencil and silkscreen for $80.

And what pop culture collection would be complete without the Liberace prayer candle? $15 on Etsy.

I can’t take credit for these upcycled clocks, but I’m proud to say that the artist is a reader of this blog.

Paula is a self taught artist living in Texas. (Refrain from Texas bashing) All of her clocks and mixed media assemblages are made from found objects. Prices are around the $175-$250 range.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I’ll let the photos (linked to Etsy) take it from here. Yes, because I’m too lazy to actually write sentences at the moment.

The holiday show that I’ve been freaking out about is just around the corner and I have maybe the first few days worth of merchandise ready. But that’s ok. I’ll get my act together last minute, as always.

Gifted has it’s own website now! Check out some of the awesome vendors and follow Gifted on Facebook!

Hooks are big sellers. Coat hooks, hat hooks, key hooks. You know those hooks made out of old doorknobs? Personally, I’m tired of looking at them, but people love them. Can’t make ’em fast enough.

I’ve been working like a mad woman, even cutting my bathroom breaks short. And yet, I still don’t have enough inventory for even the first week of Gifted yet. Anyone wanna help? I’ll pay you as much as I earn. Next to nuthin.

I haven’t priced or uploaded these to the store yet.

Antique level coat hook. Easy to hang. It levels itself.

New blog alert! There’s not much there yet, but Hand Made Brooklyn looks very promising. I found out about it via Brokelyn.

Hand Made was started by a couple of chicks living in the boonies of Brooklyn (Boro Park and *Flatbush). They are inviting crafters to post DIY tips, self promotion articles and tips on all things crafty.

There’s also a free directory for listing your crafty website or Etsy shop.

* Flatbush is just a guess. She says “among the Victorian houses.”

Gifted Holiday Show in Manhattan!

Gifted Holiday Show in Manhattan! published on 2 Comments on Gifted Holiday Show in Manhattan!

Ah, it’s finally been announced. Those secretive “craft shows” I’ve been mentioning that I wasn’t allowed to elaborate on until the promoters posted it first. Brooklyn Flea’s “Gifted” will take place in Manhattan this year, behind the old Tower Records on 4th Street and Lafayette.

Last year’s indoor holiday market was held right across from the flea market in Ft. Greene and it was awesome (as in…cha ching for me!). I’m totally psyched (like, fer ser!) to be in Manhattan because I predict twice as much traffic…and you couldn’t move in that Ft. Greene one.

Gifted runs from November 27th-December 24th, 5 days per week. The schedule goes something like this but may change:

Wednesday: 4p-9p (including a weekly after-work shopping party with special guest DJs and free booze)
Thursday + Friday: 1p-8p
Saturday: Noon-8p
Sunday: Noon-7p

Most of the vendors are booked already but there’s still space for a few more, if you’re interested. So, pass it along!

And come shop, shop, shop!

This little elf has been hard at work creating reclaimed gift items for the holidays. I’ll be doing five solid weeks of daily craft shows with no time to replenish, so it’s all gotta get done now.

“Going Postal” is the prototype for my mail boxes. I bought a bunch of old mailbox doors on ebay and they sat around for about 2 years while I waited to find someone to build me a box around it. Then I was just like “F it, I’ll build my own crude box.” So I did. It needs some tweaking, but I love it.

img_9035.jpg

“Baby Bell” is…..yeah, I dunno….just a bunch of pieces I stuck together. It’s a dual purpose coat hanger and bell so you can call your family and pets to dinner.

img_9053.jpg

The old drawer is mostly just hanging artwork, although if you really wanted to make it useful, you can sit keys on the shelves. The chicken wire was left over from my kitty fence in system. I have a bunch of 4×4 pieces where we cut around the posts.

img_9056.jpg

Another old drawer. The partitions were already in there. Recycled wallpaper and side “pull” were added. Can be used as tsotchke shelf and hat/scarf hook.

img_9045.jpg

Ah, my piece de resistance! Scroll through the Flickr photos to see what I mean. This antique mold (?) is a multi purpose item. The top is open, so it can be a candle holder or vase (insert water holding object). The side seen here is an earring holder with mirror. There’s a necklace holder side, a framed photo side and 2 mini shelves to hold small perfume bottles. Yeah, it’s a girlie piece. But so rugged looking!

None of these are priced or on my store yet. I want to get them out there, but I also want to hoard inventory for my shows. Such problems I have.

Fabulous Recycled Chandeliers

Emilia sent a link to Casa Sugar’s post on chandeliers made from everyday objects. (Ok, they may not all be from recycled material, as my title suggests, but they should be!) Some very beautiful fixtures were featured in the article, but guess which one was my favorite? The Barbie hair chandelier (above) by John Adler! How friggin awesome and creepy is that? What could be better? Answer: Human hair!

il_430xn77103167.jpg

I’m also loving this crazy paper clip chandelier. How long do you think this takes to do? You can find out. It’s $300 for a complete fixture, but Etsy seller ReDesign Technologies offers a discounted kit if you want to do a little self assembly action. Honestly, $300 for a totally unique chandelier? Not bad. Not bad at all.

il_430xn59672776.jpg

The plastic cup chandelier by Etsy seller Sunfish is superfabulous and are you ready for the price? $45! No, I didn’t leave off a zero. No, it’s not made in China. Sunfish is in Ohio. I know! Right? Take advantage while you can! Before Sunfish reads this and says “$45? What was I thinking?”

* Don’t forget. This post was totally stolen from Casa Sugar.

Since I’m all about stenciling now, I thought I’d share some info about Stencil 1 with you.

Up until now I was just running over to the local upstate farts and crafts store to buy run of the mill designs. Although….I DO love them! Well, I just got hip to Stencil 1….”graffiti stencils”.

How cool…

stencil.jpg

A few things that perhaps everyone except me knew about….

Stencil 1 is sold in stores throughout the city. In fact, throughout the world.

They have a book! It includes 25 reusable stencils plus instructionals. Plus, there’s a new book on the way that covers repeat patterns.

Their website includes how-to guides and a kick ass blog.

I was looking for vintage doll parts. Now I have so many dolls I don’t know what to do with them all! When I started out this morning, I really wanted to alter the Barbies, but then I realized I had to figure out how to sew to do what I wanted to. So, I skipped that and started with the easy stuff. Drillin’, screwin’ and gluin’.

Since I don’t advocate smoking, let’s call this a jewelry holder instead of an ashtray. Actually, it probably shouldn’t be near heat anyway since the sides are plastic.

Plywood + Paint = Great Furniture

Plywood + Paint = Great Furniture published on 6 Comments on Plywood + Paint = Great Furniture

I took yesterday off and went over to my friend Melissa’s house to watch the inauguration. Turns out, she’s a DIY furniture maven. Most of these designs were made from pieces of new plywood, with the exception of the china hutch, which I believe she told me was a curb find.

3214163682_1611a364bc.jpg

I asked Melissa if this was one of those spools that everyone (well, me) had in their younger days. It’s not. She cut the top from plywood. You can grab one of those spools for a reclaimed version, but they are not one solid piece, so perhaps it wouldn’t work as well. If you put glass over the fabric as Melissa was planning to do, that would take care of the problem of uneven grooves. I love this coffee table!

3213316441_13336643fc.jpg

The kitchen counter top, again, just plywood, paint and a bunch of creativity and skills. I forgot to ask whether it’s coated with poly or resin. We all know how expensive counter tops are (Don’t we?). This is a quick, easy, inexpensive solution. Even if you don’t have any painting skills, a solid color with a stencil or tape guided lines could be fabulously gorgeous.

3213316547_65cc2e0a95.jpg

I didn’t ask, but it’s clear that this dining table is better quality wood than ply. With a bit of sanding and routed edges, it looks like a professional piece. You can do anything you want! A game board, an American flag (because I’m so patriotic now), fake place settings….

3214163804_2eea033397.jpg

Melissa’s mom painted this furniture find. At least that’s what I think she said. Too much champagne yesterday. That cat is Melissa’s and she’s now close to 20 years old. Ok, so maybe you need some skills to paint this one. You want images but lack painting skills? Decoupage.
