Perishables. Meat Couture.

Pinar Yolacan makes clothing out of meat. The former fashion design student turned artist created this body of work about 8 years ago, but I just discovered it via Etsy’s Storque.

As an environmentalist and vegetarian, I’m appalled by the waste and disrespect for these animal carcasses. As an art lover and photographer, I can’t get enough of these images!

Yolacan’s choice of models is brilliant. These every day women are perfect choices for the wrinkled and discarded flesh they are wearing. They can be your school teacher, your grandma or the homeless woman down the street.

Maybe for her next project, Pilar can do a vegetarian version.

Electric Windows in Beacon

There’s a big ole abandoned building on the east side of Main Street in Beacon. In the town’s heyday, it was the electric blanket factory. Today, each window is covered by a fabulous work of art.

This Saturday, July 31st, the street artists will converge on Beacon once again to do a live installation. They’ll create the works of art right in front of the building during “Electric Windows”. There will also be music, vendors, the works!

If you plan on spending the night in Beacon, there’s an after party at The Piggy Bank starting at 10pm.

Then you can fall in love with Beacon and go buy my house.

Hey Brooklyn Photographers, think you can capture the essence of Brooklyn? If so, there’s a juried exhibit called Capture Brooklyn accepting submissions through August 29th. Eighty photographs will be exhibited at the Power House Arena during the Dumbo Arts Festival.

Yours truly just signed up. It’s been a looonnnggg looonnnggg time since I shot anything for art’s sake. Gotta light that fire under my butt!

Brooklyn Photos from a Brooklyn Guy

Friend plug alert! I went to high school with photographer Erik Lieber. He was taking darkroom classes at Murrow before I knew how to adjust my shutter speed. And 30 years later, he’s shooting Brooklyn like nobody’s business.

Lieber lives in Gowanus now. That’s the industrial area between Carroll Gardens and Park Slope that has just been declared a Superfund site. He shoots both rural and urban landscapes, but of course it’s the Brooklyn shots I really love!

The digital works are printed on archival fiber paper. Price range is $100-$150.

I’ve been eying Eric’s gorgeous work on Facebook and last weekend I finally got around to visiting so I could choose a print to hang on my wall (once I have walls). After making him take out every print he’s ever made, I decided on the one I originally wanted online. (That would be the image above.)

Maybe one day I’ll actually frame and hang my signed Lieber, but for now, I’m happy just to own it.

Most of these shots are Gowanus unless otherwise specified. There are tons more on his site.

Another group show at the Climate Gallery in Long Island City. “Putting It All Together” opens Saturday, February 6 from 6-9pm. My buddy Suprina Kenney is in this one. It’s her first group show!

Also opening Saturday (reception is 6-9pm) is a collaboration between another buddy, Liz Heskin Contemporary and Metropolitan Green (remember that video interview?). “Natural Reactions” features 13 artists demonstrating the intimate relationship between artist and environment.

The show takes place at 439 Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn. BTW, it’s really easy to get to LIC from there.

Ok, so I’m plugging my friends. Nothing wrong with that!

So, I was passing through High Falls yesterday and went into what I thought was The New York Store to buy some bread. The next thing I know, I’m walking out with a creepy baby sculpture.

The bad news is: The New York Store is no longer there. I have no idea when it closed. Plus, I didn’t get any bread.

The good news: The Last Bite is the cafe that took it’s place and it is suh-weet! They have vegetarian friendly (or meaty) sandwiches and pastries, yada, yada….

But the artwork and tschotskes in there! OMG, I could have bought everything, only there’s some stuff I would totally make myself, so why buy that, huh? I can’t sculpt clay, so I bought this cat baby. I didn’t price the Obama/Bush salt and pepper shakers that I fell in love with, but I may regret that.

My husband and I currently have 6 cats and never wanted have kids. I figured if we DID have a baby, maybe it would look something like this.

The pets love it! The husband, not so much.

Kitsch is awesome, but kitsch plus pop culture kicks ass! I’m lovin’ these crafty items I found.

The Johnny Cash switch plate is only $8 on Etsy. It’s just the most fabulous photo ever.

elvis.jpg

Once upon a time I found a crocheted Elvis at a tag sale for $7 and sold him at the flea market for $120. I still regret letting him go. If you can crochet, here’s a pattern for ya!

As if the thought of Adam Lambert isn’t horrific enough, check out this scary embroidered portrait. There’s a how-to on the Craftster forum if you must have one.

Um, maybe I should have titled this post “Scary Celebrity Crafts”.  Zombie M.J. and E.T. Did they have a thing? It’s a spray paint stencil and silkscreen for $80.

And what pop culture collection would be complete without the Liberace prayer candle? $15 on Etsy.

2nd Souls Doll Sculptures!

Yes, I stood out in the rain to do the Brooklyn Flea on Saturday. Let’s not focus on that. Instead, let’s talk dolls. As I was setting up, I saw these fascinating beings and dropped everything to run over and have a closer look. Suprina of 2nd Souls creates sculptures from found objects that belong in galleries and museums, not at flea markets where people say “Uh, would you take $25 for that?”

I did the Dumbo market on Sunday and guess who was my next door neighbor? Suprina! I was all like “Yeah, go get something to eat. I’ll watch your stuff.” So, I got to spend the day looking at these awesome creatures and chatting with my long lost sister from the Planet of Discarded Dolls.

An interior designer by day, she only recently started focusing on her art work. She is drawn to society’s castaways and reincarnates these abandoned objects so they can live amongst us once again. The little sculptures start at around $45. Something more elaborate carries a $1500 price tag. Suprina also does customized portraits.

To make ends meet at the market, Suprina offers small reclaimed wood boxes and vases in the $30 price range. The weathered wood fits in perfectly with the battle-scarred effigies. The boxes are not up on her website yet.

You want a doll? Gotta contact Suprina. Her studio is located at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and y’all welcome to stop by for a tour.

Ok, I have your whole Saturday agenda planned out for you. Here’s what you’re gonna do. You drive up here or take Metro North early in the morning. Hit my tag sale first (obviously). Then you’ll probably need some brunch. Stop by Home Spun Foods for some refueling. Or try Marlena’s for the best pierogies this side of the Ukraine.

The Beacon Pub Crawl takes place on Saturday, the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day. I’ve never been, but I just saw some YouTube footage. I guess there’s no avoiding the assholes if you’re on Main Street. I think there’s also a goofy small town St. Pat’s parade too. Woo-hoo! The fun never ends in exciting Beacon!

Are you still with me? Then you’ll hit DIA, because you can’t come to Beacon without visiting DIA. It’s going to be a nice day, so after that, stroll by the river. You can do the rail trail or Long Dock or hang out by the riverside park.

And then, it’s what Second Saturday is all about….the art openings. Some start as early as 4pm, but it pretty much gets going between 6-9pm. Here’s a partial list:

Van Brunt has a group show going on, featuring his own work and works by Chris Albert, Kathy Feighery and others.
