SMEG, not sold in the US, as far as I know

Lucky you….our dishwasher died! It stopped working weeks ago, but we continue to use it. We’re getting some help from the dogs licking our plates clean. I wish I was joking.

Anyway, now you’ll get to benefit from 2 full days of research. We started with Consumer Report’s Greener Choices as the most important thing was energy and water efficiency. No, I take that back. It was cost.

We narrowed it down to a Kenmore Elite and Bosch, each under $600. Then we couldn’t make a decision so we ran out to Sears. The salesperson wasn’t helpful, so it was back to the computer.

Here’s the problem. We won’t be ready to renovate our kitchen for at least another year. When we do so, we’re going with retro or antique appliances. The Heartland dishwashers are $1600. They have panel kits, as does Elmira, if you want that look with your choice of dishwasher.

Once we started looking into fully integrated dishwashers which accepted these $400 panels, the price started going up. Now we were looking at the $750 range and it was between Kitchen Aid and Fagor, an Italian brand.

So, we said “Screw the panels”. We purchased something we can afford that we can live with for awhile. We ended up with the Bosch Evolution , ordered from Witbeck Appliance so we didn’t have to pay tax (out of state) or shipping (free shipping). Had we gone with something from Sears or AJ Madison, we would’ve had to pay NYS tax. Sears has free shipping, but AJ Madison charges for Beacon. We did purchase our Brooklyn appliances through AJ Madison and were very happy with them.

Yes, they ARE here! I believe they have just put an installation of their appliances into the A&D building. I have to check further. Oh, no, that was siemens. OK, then, I will tell you that they were at KBIS in May. I did a post on one of the appliances, and I do believe they are either here or will be here shortly. Their refrigerators are nothing less than adorable, you must see them!

Oh crap. I noticed the Smeg AFTER I had ordered the Bosch. I didn’t want them to be here since it was too late. Please tell me they are expensive. Please. And that they will go down in price in a few years when I’m ready to redo my kitchen. I’ve seen the fridges. Love them!!

We just got the Bosch and are very happy with it – it did take a while to arrive as one of the models was discontinued and we had to wait for the new one to be in stock, but that’s neither here nor there.
It’s a good machine, quiet and IT CLEANS THE DISHES…which you don’t realize is important until your dishwasher slowly stops doing that.

Love your site.

Thanks, Blackbird. I’m sure we’ll be very happy with the Bosch. If we REALLY didn’t care, we could’ve spent under $300 on a throw away dishwasher. But we couldn’t be that wasteful. I just wish the Bosch came in pink. 😉
