I took yesterday off and went over to my friend Melissa’s house to watch the inauguration. Turns out, she’s a DIY furniture maven. Most of these designs were made from pieces of new plywood, with the exception of the china hutch, which I believe she told me was a curb find.
I asked Melissa if this was one of those spools that everyone (well, me) had in their younger days. It’s not. She cut the top from plywood. You can grab one of those spools for a reclaimed version, but they are not one solid piece, so perhaps it wouldn’t work as well. If you put glass over the fabric as Melissa was planning to do, that would take care of the problem of uneven grooves. I love this coffee table!
The kitchen counter top, again, just plywood, paint and a bunch of creativity and skills. I forgot to ask whether it’s coated with poly or resin. We all know how expensive counter tops are (Don’t we?). This is a quick, easy, inexpensive solution. Even if you don’t have any painting skills, a solid color with a stencil or tape guided lines could be fabulously gorgeous.
I didn’t ask, but it’s clear that this dining table is better quality wood than ply. With a bit of sanding and routed edges, it looks like a professional piece. You can do anything you want! A game board, an American flag (because I’m so patriotic now), fake place settings….
Melissa’s mom painted this furniture find. At least that’s what I think she said. Too much champagne yesterday. That cat is Melissa’s and she’s now close to 20 years old. Ok, so maybe you need some skills to paint this one. You want images but lack painting skills? Decoupage.

Is that a Hoosier cabinet found in the trash?? Oh my, my, my.
And I’m laughing my (frozen) rear off visualizing you getting caught up in the moment and painting your kitchen table today in American flag motif. That’s OK…I sang the National Anthem yesterday. I seemingly couldn’t control the words from spilling out of my mouth. Loudly!
I could see you getting caught up in the moment! But I sang the anthem in someone’s living room…because I was forced to! By hoosier garbage girl. And they call this a free country!
Hahahahaha! 😉
Your voice is fab, darling, and I believe we were all teary while singing out loud with the TV! Here are the details you forgot in the champagne fugue:
1- It turns out that my neighbor Greg (whom you met that day) also has a much better version of the round coffee table with a hole in middle – handcrafted from beautiful old wood – maybe even walnut? He wants $100 for it, should I go for it? I immediately regretted rimming the interior ring with fringe on this one – too much.
2- Counter-ready pine, not plywood. The design was taken from Spanish tile that I found in my parents basement and now graces the part of this kitchen island you don’t see – a floor model of a Home Depot workbench with huge SWEET rolling drawers. It’s finished with a poly satin, stood up really well.
3- The table top and legs were unfinished separates from IKEA. I LOVE the American flag idea! I’ve been wanting to paint right over this one for some time now. Ob and P might inspire me!
4- Not a true Hoosier, and not from the trash – junk store in Scarborough ME. I stripped and painted the body, my ma painted the doors. I was thinking about repainting this bright yellow – minus mom’s door panels of course. The cat on the left is 2 years dead by now.
Onward!
I was teary, but alls I wanted to do was sit quietly with my box of tissues. Stand and put my hand over my heart? What kind of anarchist does that make me?
Wow, I stand corrected on sooo many things. Guess I WAS really shitfaced drunk after all!
Oh ps….yeah, TOTALLY go for the table! But I do like the one you have BECAUSE of the funkappeal.
