Murrow HS @ 1 Saul Bruckner Place

The current address of Brooklyn’s Edward R. Murrow High School is 1600 Avenue L. That may change if my fellow alum Shadrach Stanleigh gets his way.

Since the untimely death of Murrow’s founder and former beloved Principal, Saul Bruckner, there have been Facebook groups popping up. Stanleigh started one such group, to rename the block fronting Murrow to Saul Bruckner Place.

It’s a great idea! Even if you’ve never heard of Bruckner, chances are you know someone whose life he touched. You’re reading this blog? Bam! You’ve probably watched a Marissa Tomei movie or listened to the Beastie Boys? Bam! Murrowites. It’s the Boro of Murrow and we’re everywhere.

So, you should join the group and send a letter to your local councilperson. There is a letter on FB that you can use to cut and paste and add your own info. You can find your district council person here.

Easy stuff. And thank you.

When We Used To Play In The Streets

When We Used To Play In The Streets published on

An old Brooklyn buddy just posted this link on Facebook. Check out the trailer for New York Street Games, a documentary film about a simpler time in NYC. Back before blogs and Facebook and texting when we had to leave the house to have fun. Imagine that!

What I love about Bed Stuy is that it’s old school Brooklyn. I can hang out on my stoop and watch the kids play on the sidewalk (not my kids, mind you). There is still that sense of community that has been lost in many parts of New York.

FYI, I was a Chinese handball gal myself. Never played stickball in my life.

The Nevele was one of the last remaining Catskill resorts from a bygone era. Sadly, last month they closed their doors.

A NJ based investment group purchased the hotel in 1997 and turned it over 3 years later to another NJ company. $11 million was spent on improvements and it’s said that the place was hopping. The financial problems were likely from failed management and not lack of business.

Ellenville has lost some major employers in the past few years and this only adds to the economic woes of the downtrodden town.

By the way, Nevele is eleven backwards because it was originally owned by 11 brothers.

If you’re anywhere close to my generation, you grew up on The Honeymooners. Staying up late meant Odd Couple, Odd Couple, Honeymooners, Twilight Zone on channel 11. I still adore Ralphie Boy and the rest of the gang. Here’s some fun NY Honeymooners trivia.

The run down walk up apartment was located at 328 Chauncey Street in “Bensonhurst”. In actuality, that’s the Bed Stuy/Bushwick border. This was the address of Jackie Gleason’s childhood home which also served as the model for the show’s set.

The Ralph Kramden statue at The Port Authority was erected in August 2000.

The Jackie Gleason Bus Depot in Sunset Park was renamed in 1988. It was originally called the 5th Avenue Bus Depot.

The Flintstones was based on The Honeymooners. I kind of always knew that, but never confirmed it until today. Rumor has that Jackie Gleason thought of suing Hanna-Barbera but decided against it.

The 2005 version of The Honeymooners starring Cedric the Entertainer was filmed in Bushwick.

There is a production company called Chauncey Street Productions named after the famed address.

How sweet it is!
