Now that we have resale of our home in mind, all bets are off as far as crazy renovation ideas. We have to cut back on costs, number one, but also we must keep in mind that the home should appeal to the masses, not just us.

Any room can be repainted by a new owner. Many of our smaller rooms are already painted in shades of pink and purple and the next person easily change that if they wish.

But the hallway? We never got to it because it’s a major job that means building a scaffold. In our minds, the hallway was always going to be red. Now we’re concerned that it may be too dark. A dark hue would be historically correct (source here) and we do want to retain as much historic accuracy as possible.

But we also want to sell it. What’s your opinion? Red? Maybe one of the colors in the stained glass window? Please post your opinion here. We leave it your hands!

Looking Back, Moving Forward (or Back)

I’m back, bitches! Kind of left you hanging the tail end of 2009. Well, the world didn’t stop spinning for any of us, so here’s the run down….

The crazy holiday schedule at Gifted kept me from blogging. I maintained the online store at first, but as the show got busier, I just put Etsy on vacation. Had too many sales go through of things I had already sold in person.

So, was it all worth it? The 5 weeks and 2 months of preparation? The moving pets and everything down to Brooklyn temporarily? Money wise, of course not. Yeah, I made money, but when you look at the bigger picture, not worth all the trouble.

However! It was worth it because it was a blast and it helped with some decisions.

This temporary Full Time Back to Brooklyn thing was a test to see if we really wanted to move back as we have been thinking about. Answer=Abso-f*ckin-lutely! It’s a long term plan, long term being less than 1 year. Once again, we have to finish renovating a house only to put it on the market.

It’s unfortunate that I’m in love with the house. It’s my dream house and this will be a sad one to let go. But that’s what I have to do….Let go of the house. Let go of the overpriced antique furniture we bought for the house. Let go of the thousands I spent on that Bradbury wallpaper. Oy. No, let it go!

Beacon itself? We can visit friends and they can visit us. Can’t say we’ll miss the suburban lifestyle though. It’s not for us. Took us 5 years to come to terms, but put a fork in us, we’re done.

So, that’s what’s been going on here.

What other news is there?

We said goodbye to Bed Stuy Banana at the end of 2009. She just couldn’t keep up with the blog. She will be missed.

Another NY landmark bites the dust. Goodbye, Tavern on the Green.

Let’s end with some good news.

Brooklyn Flea is taking on the Williamsburgh Savings Bank at 1 Hanson Place. It’s a gorgeous indoor location. The market starts this coming weekend without moi as I need to get my act together and regroup.

Happy 2010!

Fairytale of the Holidays

Fairytale of the Holidays published on 3 Comments on Fairytale of the Holidays

A long, long time ago I hooked up with an illegal Irish immigrant I met in an East Village bar. We had a brief fling just before I had planned to move to Germany. He went back to Dublin, then on to London for work. I met up with him in London where we lived together after only having been a couple for 8 full days before I left NYC.Christmas 1987 we sat in a Dublin pub and this song came on the radio. We weren’t too happy in London and wanted to get back to NY. He promised me that the following year we’d be back in NY-together-for the holidays.

We were. And 22 years later, we’re still living in the states. Only he’s legal now because I married his foreign ass so he could stay in the country.

We’ve spent Christmases in Dublin and Hannukahs in NYC having Chinese and a movie. This year it’s Dublin with the promise of a full time Brooklyn Christmas next year.

Every year for the past 20 years I’ve made my own holiday cards (minus a couple of years). It’s too hectic this year to photoshop my pets into a witty picture so hope you enjoyed this little story.

If not, happy holidays anyway.

And may all your dreams come true.

(PS: How about that Brittany Murphy, huh?)

Can’t believe how lame I’ve been about blogging. Well, it’s not gonna get any better. Now Gifted is open every day until Christmas eve. No more Mondays and Tuesdays off. Not that I updated this blog on those days. And it’s open until 8pm most nights except Wednesdays, which is the 9pm free beer nights.

I’m so tired.

Well, I’ve got nothing to say. Just wanted to post SOMETHING.

Hope y’all well!

Yesterday I packed up the 6 cats and headed down to Brooklyn to stay full time with the husband and dogs in our 1 bedroom garden apartment. It’s only for three weeks while I’m working Gifted, then we’re off to Dublin for Christmas. So actually, I’m home UNTIL the holidays.

Just wanted to check in and say I’m still alive….just too crazed to blog. I warned ya!

Hey, check out the rock exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. I won’t be able to go until after the New Year when life starts anew.

That’s it! I’ve done all the creating I can possibly do before the holiday market starts. It’s the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and I now have to start packing and getting ready for the big move down to Brooklyn (yay!). BTW, we are celebrating our vegan Thanksgiving with the Boston friends tomorrow so we can get more prep in on Thursday. Such is life.

Instead of putting my store in vacation mode, I left the listings up with a note NOT TO BUY! Hope that works.

Hey, enjoy your bird carcass while celebrating the massacre of our native peoples!

Well, it’s no vacation, but I can’t keep up with the blog at the moment. Been burning the candle at both ends trying to make enough crap for Gifted. If anyone wants to push their related merch or NY event, send a tip! Heck, write your own article and I’ll post it.

If something interesting comes up, I’ll definitely be here, but for now, I’m warning ya….I won’t be posting every day until after the New Year. Just had to let you know so I don’t feel obligated.

See? That’s my post for today. Lame. But enjoy the photo of my dog with her head up her ass.

Hooks are big sellers. Coat hooks, hat hooks, key hooks. You know those hooks made out of old doorknobs? Personally, I’m tired of looking at them, but people love them. Can’t make ’em fast enough.

I’ve been working like a mad woman, even cutting my bathroom breaks short. And yet, I still don’t have enough inventory for even the first week of Gifted yet. Anyone wanna help? I’ll pay you as much as I earn. Next to nuthin.

I haven’t priced or uploaded these to the store yet.

Antique level coat hook. Easy to hang. It levels itself.

Dragon Fly parquet floor tile hat/scarf/leash hook with bakelite knob.

Antique child’s ski hook. Looks better in person. It’s hard to photograph a ski!

This little elf has been hard at work creating reclaimed gift items for the holidays. I’ll be doing five solid weeks of daily craft shows with no time to replenish, so it’s all gotta get done now.

“Going Postal” is the prototype for my mail boxes. I bought a bunch of old mailbox doors on ebay and they sat around for about 2 years while I waited to find someone to build me a box around it. Then I was just like “F it, I’ll build my own crude box.” So I did. It needs some tweaking, but I love it.

img_9035.jpg

“Baby Bell” is…..yeah, I dunno….just a bunch of pieces I stuck together. It’s a dual purpose coat hanger and bell so you can call your family and pets to dinner.

img_9053.jpg

The old drawer is mostly just hanging artwork, although if you really wanted to make it useful, you can sit keys on the shelves. The chicken wire was left over from my kitty fence in system. I have a bunch of 4×4 pieces where we cut around the posts.

img_9056.jpg

Another old drawer. The partitions were already in there. Recycled wallpaper and side “pull” were added. Can be used as tsotchke shelf and hat/scarf hook.

img_9045.jpg

Ah, my piece de resistance! Scroll through the Flickr photos to see what I mean. This antique mold (?) is a multi purpose item. The top is open, so it can be a candle holder or vase (insert water holding object). The side seen here is an earring holder with mirror. There’s a necklace holder side, a framed photo side and 2 mini shelves to hold small perfume bottles. Yeah, it’s a girlie piece. But so rugged looking!

None of these are priced or on my store yet. I want to get them out there, but I also want to hoard inventory for my shows. Such problems I have.

Mwwwhhaaahhaaahhaaahhaaaa! Look what I scored last week! I hit some garage sales over the weekend and fell in love these spooky plastic beings.

The woman who sold me the dummy told me he’s famous. I forgot his name though. Anyone?

img_8840.jpg

The clown is from the same woman. No, it’s not Bozo.

img_8862.jpg

It’s Jaaa-aaack! The original!

img_8856.jpg

Her dirty hair, her oversized filthy dress. Love it.

img_8843.jpg

I dunno. This couple just scares me. They look all, like religious or something. They’ll be made into an art piece, as will dirty ho. I’ll obviously keep the others as is.

Kristi of Here Be Old Things and I have been contemplating tag/estate sales. We’ve emailed. We conversed over the phone. We even had an in person meeting on the subject. But it never got off the ground because we both take on more than we can handle.

Until now. Well, wait, that’s not right. We’re DEFINITELY taking on more than we can handle, but the universe is lighting a fire under our butts to focus on our tag team effort.

Save the date! We just met with our first Kristi/Phyllis tag sale client yesterday and it’s a go!

The sale will be the first weekend of November in Tenafly, NJ.

Some of the more awesome items include original Americana posters by Howard Chandler Christy and L. Helquera and a pair of mid century Alan Gould string chairs.

There’s also an 8′ Eliminator pool table! I learned something about moving pool tables though. Apparently, you really do need a reputable pool table mover to take it apart and put it back together. Bummer, because I wanted to strap that baby to my back and haul it home.

Etsy + Soopsee = New Store!

Etsy + Soopsee = New Store! published on 3 Comments on Etsy + Soopsee = New Store!

OMG, my life is complete now! I’m like a 50’s housewife who has just discovered the dishwasher. I used to (until yesterday) spend hours uploading inventory to Etsy, then my Reclaimed Store, then Artfire, then other stores…yada, yada. Ok, not exactly true. I kind of did Etsy sometimes and then got bored with the rest.

But Soopsee! Oh, sweet, sweet Soopsee! It’s an Etsy API, which up until two days ago, I did not know the meaning of. Application Programming Interface. Etsy users can open a free Soopsee account and let them host for you or keep your own domain and upload the Soopsie to work with it.

I wanted to keep my name because I’m a control freak. This isn’t free, but there’s a summer special that costs $4.99 per month. I can handle that. I splurged for another $14.95 to buy reclaimedhomestore.com because it seemed easier to start from scratch rather than messing with my existing blog site pages.

Got the look I wanted. Transferred all Etsy listings in one pop. Set up auto RSS for my blog on the store site. Auto Twitter when I upload a new item. All done in less than 2 hours.

The software is still in beta, so there are some quirks. The only one that really bothers me is the categories on top of the page. The Soopsie default category is “Art” and when I added my own, I came up with 2 “art” categories. There isn’t yet a customized option to get rid of it, so I’m stuck with it.

I’m not a religious woman, but I just want to say “God bless Vanessa over at Etsy Storque for turning me on to Soopsee.” And God bless The Creator of the software. Hallelujah!

The “Make Me An Offer” Sale

The “Make Me An Offer” Sale published on 2 Comments on The “Make Me An Offer” Sale

This enamel top table needs work. I was going to paint her up real purdy like and charge over $300, but I just don’t have it in me…

I’m unloading crap. I mean business. The furniture has gots to go, baby!

Ok, here’s how this works….

I created a Flickr set called “sale“. There’s a number on finished pieces. That was the list price. Offer what you want. I may or may not accept on these items I worked my arse off on.

There are “as is” pieces. Some have prices, some don’t. I’ll probably take anything to get it off my hands, as long as it’s not less than what I paid. I want to get rid of stuff, but I don’t want to lose money on it.

The photos that are question marked are antiques that I don’t know the value of. I’d probably rather not sell them until I do the research, but if it’s a good enough offer, I can be persuaded.

Fire away with questions about measurements or anything else. I also have lots more in my Beacon garage and basement. These need work! If you’re a refurbisher/reseller, come have a look.

Thanks!

Reclaimed Home is Two Years Old!

Reclaimed Home is Two Years Old! published on 5 Comments on Reclaimed Home is Two Years Old!

 3787346825_57a6001c20.jpg

Two and a half years ago I had my mid life career crisis. I shifted my focus from photography to a web based business. Reclaimed Home was meant to be a totally different beast, but I went with the flow.

The mission statement back in August of 2007 was pretty off track. There were to be four functional sections of this website…..

1. The Blog. Ok, still going strong! My initial goal was to keep up the 5 posts per day, 5 days per week. I’m now down to one post and that’s a struggle. It’s just waaayyyyy too time consuming! I guess I was hoping for more tips and guest bloggers. (hint)

2. The Forum. Yeah, nobody bothers with that and I haven’t done anything to promote it. I’ll probably make it disappear real soon. It’s stale.

3.  The Store. The bread and butter of Reclaimed Home. Or is it? Well, not the Reclaimed Home Store. I don’t love the software, so I’ve been ignoring it and uploading everything to Etsy. Question to any Etsy folks out there….Do you only have an Etsy store? Do you think it’s important to have my own store too? I’m debating whether or not I should kill my own store or shift to a different software.

FYI, initially I had wanted to represent other creatives here and NOT MAKE ANYTHING MYSELF!! I had difficulty finding reliable artists (I know, an oxymoron) and said “Screw this. If I want something done, I have to do it myself.”

FYI again, I had absolutely no intention of becoming a flea market vendor. It just so happened that Brownstoner held a salvage fest the week before I launched and I did so well there, I jumped on board when he started his Brooklyn Flea.

4. The Listings. Hmm, the FSBO listing service is not exactly working out as planned, but the real estate photography is doing just fine. I love shooting houses. It’s easy. It’s fun. It pays. What more can a gal ask for?

So, what does 2010 hold in store for Reclaimed Home?

The universe has been telling me that I shouldn’t have been so quick to abandon the photography. Luckily, I didn’t and I’ve been incorporating those skills into this business.

The universe, or rather, my pocketbook has been telling me that I’m nuts to pay $200 per month for a storage space. I’ve made a decision to cut out furniture and just deal in small handmade items. It will probably be an entire season before I rid myself of everything, but look for a sale this coming week.

And that’s about it in a nut shell. My biggest disappointment is that I’m not earning enough to hire help. I thought I would be by now, but I’m still working it out, doing everything myself so I can take a profit.

Goals: Organize, for f*ck’s sake! And try to take on some more tag sales.
