Schmoozefest and Silent Auction

Our first event!  We’re starting with an easy one.  Boozing and bids.  Sangria and snacks.  On Wednesday, July 30th, you’re invited to stop by the shop to say hello to your fellow neighbors.  We decided on a meet and greet mixer because there are so many new faces moving to the neighborhood, we thought it might be fun to have them compare notes and get tips from the old timers.

As far as festivities go, we’ll be holding a silent auction on newer pieces and some older ones that will have verrry low starting bids.

Sorry, we can’t fill you in on what’s on offer because even we don’t know yet.  Just save the date, will ya? Here’s the Facebook event page.

Mid Century Hutch $460 $360 or best offer

Ok kids, it’s time to move some inventory.  Some of this stuff has been sitting in our shop for two whole months and we can’t have that!  We need to purge and get new pieces.  We need to make some room for classes and events. Let’s get this done.

As much as we hate to sell under value, our loss is your gain. Any piece of furniture that has not been refurbished will be drastically cut.  The painted items are negotiable but we can’t go too low on those because the name of the game here is to make money, not lose it.

Here’s a taste.  There’s plenty more where this came from! Contact us, buy online or better still…just come into the shop and buy, buy, buy!

* We do not condone fishing here at Reclaimed Home.  It was just a cute graphic.  Go veg!

If you’ve been noticing a lack of new shop listings and blog posts, we’ve got an excuse for ya.  Emilia had the nerve to visit her sisters in Paris, leaving me to hold the fort all by my little self.  Ooh la feckin’ la.  Back home, I’m dealing with updating an apartment and tenants moving out while getting ready for the new ones to move in.  But there will be pay back in a couple of days when I leave for Dublin the day she returns.

So yeah, June is an awkward month for us.  Ah, but July!  When I get back from visiting the in-laws in Ye Ould Sod, it’s back to business as usual.

We’ve gotten some requests for custom pieces (Keep them coming!) and we want to concentrate more on the services, events and DIY classes. A vintage shop is great and all that, but we’re about to move forward with our mission.  In July, that is.

But for now, give us this week.

PS: Yes, the shop will be open during our regular business hours!  We’re just understaffed is all.

Pink Tag Sale!

Pink Tag Sale! published on

12915770035_7b8801ce42_z

We just went around the shop and put sales stickers on the Memorial Weekend discounted items.  They are pink because that’s the closest color to red we had. We’ll discount them online once (if) we figure out an easy way to do it. But for now….refer to this blog post for sale items, ok? Remember, this sale is only happening over Memorial Weekend: Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Come next Wednesday (because we’re closed on Tuesdays) prices are back to normal.  If you’re away for the weekend, buy it online and pick it up next week.

So, without further ado, here it is!

The gorgeous marble top John Meeks dresser that is currently priced at $450 will be cut down to $350. That’s $100 savings for those of you who can’t do math!
IMG_0649
Here’s another $100 price cut in the architectural salvage department.  In need of a fireplace summer cover?  The one above is down to $350.
IMG_8698
We can’t go too low on everybody’s favorite piece in the shop but the deco dresser is $50 off this weekend, down to $650.
IMG_8901

The mid century metal lounge chair that looks like a wood lounge chair is one of our newer items that are marked down for the weekend.  Originally $225.  Grab it for $185. IMG_8681As much as we love this reclaimed antique stove base coffee table, we really want to see it find a better home.  The $210 piece will be marked down to $150 as of tomorrow.  Come on, that’s a great price for such a unique find!

IMG_8674

These two concrete planters (well, they weren’t originally planters) are friggin’ awesome and they do have quite a few fans.  Alas, nobody has grabbed them up at the original price of $150 apiece so come and take them for $95 each.

There are plenty more items that are marked down, plus almost anything that’s not tagged on sale is negotiable. If you don’t want to schlep to Crown Heights to look at tags, shoot us an email with your best offer. Done.

Memorial Weekend Sale!

Memorial Day Weekend.  When New Yorkers flea to the north, south, east and west.  Since we fear being stuck in the store alone all weekend long with nobody walking in, we’re holding a sale for all of you folks left behind.  You know who you are.  You have to work.  You don’t have a house in the Hamptons. Didn’t get your act together to grab a cottage in the Catskills.

It’s not an entire store sale, but we may be negotiable on every item.  Alls ya gotta do is ask.  We don’t bite.  We can’t tell you what exactly will be on sale yet because then we wouldn’t sell anything this week, would we?  Let’s put it this way:  There are some items we’ve had kicking around since day one.  We want them gone.  At least one piece will be marked down by $100, but most of the older furniture price cuts will be around $50 off. Even the smalls will be best offer on most items.

So, you in?

Gonna do this Friday, Saturday and Sunday since we’re closed on Mondays.

New Piece Monday

Because our shop is tiny for type of business we have, we must move things quickly or it will begin to look stale in no time.  If a piece sits for more than two weeks, we get tired of looking at it.  Ok yeah, so we’ve only been open for a month plus, but still.  Here are some of the newer creations we’d like to highlight….so they can look great in your home and not in our shop.

The red desk makes a statement.  It says “I’m hot.  You will be hot too if you put me in your home.”  Simply red on the bottom and a troweled red and black finish on top.  $350

IMG_8949This antique stove legged coffee table (one of two that we have) was a Brimfield find.  The top was just painted black plywood.  All we had to do was add some fabulous painting technique to the top.  One of our favorite pieces in the shop at the moment.  $225

IMG_8944

Phyllis grabbed this old plywood top, crummy leg piece at an estate sale thinking it was a table.  Emilia interpreted it as a stool, which definitely makes more sense.  New paint.  Fab fabric.  It works!  $150

IMG_8932

This mid century credenza had partial damage so it would’ve been a shame to cover all the wood veneer.  We left as much of it as possible and brightened up the rest with a bit of orange and purple. $350

IMG_8927Small, sweet and inexpensive.  A lightweight side table with a heavyweight design. Only 75 buckaroonies.

Repurposed Headboard Bench

Repurposed Headboard Bench published on

IMG_8913We didn’t invent the headboard bench.  It’s one of the more common furniture projects among upcyclers, but we love our new headboard bench just the same. Built by our carpenter, Angel (You didn’t think us fancy ladies did ALL the work, did you?) and painted by Emilia.  Phyllis stuck the cushions on and took pictures. And wrote this post.

Go buy it on our shop. $425. Word.

Empty Store Monday

The weekend didn’t seem too busy.  There were plenty of hours with no customers in the shop, but here we are on our Monday off and there’s much replenishing to do, so maybe it was a good sales weekend after all. Tomorrow will be a big shopping day. Yay! We’re in search of dressers, desks, coffee tables and kitchen/dining tables, but only what can fit in the van and shop of course, which means we’ll pick up a single dresser.  Nah! It’s not that bad.

More to follow on the new merch later this week, but for now we say a fond farewell to some of our favorite pieces that have been with us since the beginning (3 weeks ago). Our first child (above).  We played it safe with a “shabby sleek” look and a pretty patina top.  Going to a photo studio on Long Island. IMG_0590 The orange dresser.  A mid century piece we found locally, near death.  The design was done with masking tape. Heading to New Jersey.

IMG_8704

The copper tub.  We spent so much time and effort trying to remove that patina.  In the end, the patina was stronger than us and we grew to love it.  So did the person who bought it. Also, going to NJ.

IMG_8684

Our sweet skinny red-n-wood side table left us for Manhattan late last week. She didn’t take up much space in the shop.  Wasn’t any trouble at all.

IMG_8714

This drop leaf table was with us since the very beginning prior to opening when we were selling strictly online while renovating.  We were completely perplexed as to why nobody was buying it as it’s the perfect table for a small city apartment.  Turns out, it’s going to a country home in New Hampshire, so what do we know?

Some of the items we sell do stay in Brooklyn, but that’s how it went last week.  We gotta get moving on the new stuff this week!

Oh, what have we here?  To quote Manilow, “looks like we made it”….to the New York Times Home and Garden section!

Didjya see it??

How does one get in the NYT?  By being a pushy pain in the ass.  Seriously, reporter Helene Stapinkski was incredibly sweet and somewhat brave to submit an article about two Mid Century women (They quoted that one!) just getting started in the salvage business.  She did her own fact checking and then the Times called to fact check her facts.  Very professional, that Times. They’ll go far.

Hopefully this will make us so busy that we can hire a couple of schleppers to save our old lady backs.  And feet.  Oy, the feet!

Oh PS:  As a semi-retired professional photographer who spent many years in the biz, I (Phyllis) can finally say that I was published in The Times.  Photo isn’t credited and it’s just a piece of merchandise but I’ll know.

And PPS: We’ll never forget our first online article by Casa Cara, who came to support us at our Grand Opening.

Gold Leaf Signage

IMG_8848

Ok, so we cheated. We started gold leafing the storefront window, but after one letter, we packed in the gold leaf for gold glass paint. Leafing was just too time consuming to work on while the store was open.   Merchandise was moved to one side, a ladder was in the window. We just had to get ‘er done.

Does anybody notice the difference? Sure if you compare real gold leaf to paint side by side, the difference is obvious to spot. But just like this? Meh, it’s fine!

We decided that it looked better without black trim and not just because we didn’t want to do it.  Maybe we’ll actually leaf the address numbers. Maybe.

Cherry Blossoms in Brooklyn

It’s that time of year again! Allergy season? Yes, but deal with it and head on over to The Brooklyn Botanic Garden this weekend for Sakura Mastsuri, the cherry blossom festival. If you’ve never been to The Botanic Garden (whaaat??) then this is THE weekend to go.

The festivities commence on Saturday, April 26th and run all weekend long. As if walking the beautiful gardens with the trees in full bloom is not enough, there are Japanese dance, music and martial arts performances as well as demonstrations and ceremonies.

The festival gets crowded so it’s probably a good idea to purchase tickets online in advance. There is an extra fee to Sakura Matsuri unless you’re a member. $25 as opposed to the usual $10 entrance fee.

It will be awesome!!

But don’t spend the entire day there and I’ma gonna tell you why. The Flatbush Avenue entrance is closed, which leaves only Eastern Parkway and Washington Avenue entrances open. The Washington Avenue entrance is literally one block from Reclaimed Home, hours 10am-6pm. Just walk down Carroll, cross the Franklin Avenue Shuttle overpass and that’s our little dead end block. 945-947 Carroll.

So, go have fun at the festival but you better stop by and say hello!

Sooo, most of the smalls sold out during the opening, but ya’knowhat? We got more. Aaannnddd…now we’re drowning in smalls. Took a trip to Connecticut in the rain yesterday to visit Grace Napoleon of Folk Couture. She’s an upcycled clothing designer but she did sell vintage items in the past. She needed to get rid of her vintage inventory and we needed the goods, so it was a match!

Drove around a bit more while up that way. The result is that we have lots of great stuff but nowhere to walk in the shop.

Ok, starting to deal with the big pile(s) now….

Big Thanks!

The moment we opening our doors.

A big thank you to all who came by over the weekend to support Reclaimed Home’s coming out party when you could have been outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather. Although we’re bummed that the entire shop wasn’t cleared of all inventory, the sale didn’t suck.

We’re excited about some new ideas thrown at us from friends and customers. We’ll be moving forward soon with the DIY classes that we really wanted to have but thought the shop might be too small. Well, we’ll just hold smaller classes. Duh. To start, we’ll be offering fun and easy techniques like photo transfers, stenciling and found object assemblage. If there’s a specific class you would like to see offered or want to hold a “tupperware party” style workshop in your home, please don’t be shy!

Another fun idea that came up is theme sales. Every week, we’ll gather some items and have a special sale. Starting this Friday and running until Sunday, it will be the “Furniture for $50 and Under Sale”. We’ll start gathering details on Wednesday. Who knows? Maybe the sale will start sooner.

One more thing….we’ve extended the weekend hours to 6pm closing instead of 5pm.

Go time

Countdown: 1 Day. Tomorrow. Manana. 24ish hours. Reclaimed Home will be open to the public.

So, are we ready? Yeah, for the most part. We didn’t get to do the gold leafing on the windows. That probably won’t effect anybody’s shopping experience but we did want it there as an example of the services we offer. Not as many upcycled items as we would have liked. Sure, there are a few, but no clawfoot tub sofa and no dresser sink vanities. They are SO the next things in the shop once we create more space.

What do we have? Lots of effin’ amazing painted furniture. None of that safe shabby chic stuff that you see all over the place. We went with bold colors. Bold, dammit!

What else? Some architectural salvage. Doors, new hand painted sinks, antique fountain sink, a copper bathtub, pillars, antique hardware and lighting. Tschotkes starting at five bucks.

The shop is less than 900 square feet and we carved out a work area from that, so if more than 5 people show up it may get crowded, but you’re welcome to hang out in front with your alcoholic beverages on the police station block. They take up half the sidewalk with their cars, so there’s your seating right there.

10am-5pm both Saturday and Sunday. 10% discount but we do have to charge sales tax. Directions here.

Hope to see you this weekend!
