Drywell Kit

Drywell Kit published on

drywell.jpg

The mechanicals are my husband’s job. He takes care of things like foundation, structural, plumbing and electric. Then I come in and and do all of the finishing work. See, this way, I get all the credit for having a beautiful house. But I didn’t plan it just so I could get compliments. I actually become quite bored with the functional stuff sometimes and I really don’t understand it too well.

And that is my excuse for this poorly written post. I saw this Drywell Kit on Leed Pro and thought it looks like something that might work for our leaky basement. This post is my way of saying to the husband “Hey honey, check this out!”

Here’s what I’ve grasped from The Natural Home site:

Gutter runoff should be at least 20 feet away from the house to assure a dry basement. These drywells are 2 foot diameter x 2 foot tall recycled heavy duty, high density polyethylene. They will catch roof gutter runoff and yard puddles and can be used as a sump pit as well. Cost is $159 per kit, but you’ll probably need a few surrounding the house.

Sounds good? The website has all the info you need!

Two of my favorite sites are “Overheard in NY” and “True Green Confessions“. I don’t check them every day and then when I say “Let’s see what’s going on there” I always LMFAO. Here are some of the better ones. Go ahead, LYFAO:

From True Green:

“I bought organic bath products for my whole family to use, and i was feeling really great about myself… then the bottles became empty and i realized they are all #4 plastic! My county only recycles #1 and #2! Now i feel really sad!”

“I reuse sandwich bags and ziplocs. i rinse them out then hang them upside down to dry on a little clothes line above my washing machine.”

“I hate low flow toilets because you have to flush them 2-3 times to get the poop to go down.”
**Editor’s note: Yes! Yes! That is so true!

“Republicans recycle too.”

“I have about 5 recyclable cloth grocery bags. Thing is, I never remember to take them with me to the grocers.”

“I need to figure out how to transfer my PMS rage into energy for my apartment.”

From Overheard:

–A Train

Little guy to big guy wearing fur hat: You know, wearing fur is murder.
Big guy wearing fur hat: So is me pushing you off the train.

Obnoxious Hispanic Emo girl
: Back doooor! Back doooor!
Bus driver: What the f*ck!? Speak up, I don’t have all day!
Obnoxious girl: Back dooooor!
Bus driver: I have a family! I’m tired! I want to go home!
Obnoxious girl: Back doooooooor.
Bus driver: Ladies and gentlemen, our future.

Man: That’s a very cute dog!
Girl #1: Yes, she is. My dad got her at a pet store. He was going to get a dog at the shelter, but he didn’t want to.
Girl #2: Yeah, so the dog he would have gotten at the shelter died, because it was a kill shelter.
Dad: Um, I’m not really taking full responsibility for that.
Girl #1: The dog was killed. Just because you didn’t want it.
Girl #2: Yeah, dad.
Dad: Really. I think this is less than 5% my fault. Look, this where we get off.
Man: Have a good night! Sleep well.

Green Tube

It’s the environmentalist’s answer to You Tube. Go Green Tube has a similar set up to the web video giant. You can upload your own videos and search for them by date, popularity or ratings. But here’s the best part: GoGreenTube will offset one pound of carbon dioxide for every video watched. In order to earn the credits, viewers must sign up and every time they log in to watch a video, one carbon credit goes to Carbon Fund, a leading carbon offset organization.

Like this video of George W talking about global warming. But you’re not getting any credit for watching it here!

Used Moving Boxes

Used Moving Boxes published on

I don’t think I’ve ever bought moving boxes. I go to the supermarket or liquor store weeks in advance and stock up on soiled, too-small boxes because I’m too cheap to pay for a cardboard box. Plus, hel-lo….environment?!

But if you’re one of those people who doesn’t want to pack your white linens in a grungy box, then check out Ecobox.com. They sell used boxes of all shapes and sizes. I’m only assuming they are clean. I can’t imagine they would charge for a grungy box you can pick up from the supermarket.

The website also has packing materials. I filled my cart with bubble wrap and envelopes only to discover that this stuff is new. Oh well. At least the company is green.

18 Uses For Dr. Bronner All in One!!

18 Uses For Dr. Bronner All in One!! published on 3 Comments on 18 Uses For Dr. Bronner All in One!!

I’ve been showering with Dr. Bronner’s peppermint soap since the mid 80’s when I gave up on animal derived products! I read the label a few times and knew about the other uses! Sometimes when I run out of dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent or shampoo, I’LL USE BRONNER’S MAGIC ALL-ONE!

Before I get to the list of uses, I’d like to fill you in on some history about the man behind the crazy labels! Emanuel Bronner was the son of a German Jewish soap maker! He emigrated to the US in 1929 and his parents, who stayed behind, were killed in the Holocaust! To make a long story short, he married, had 3 kids! Wife died! He abandoned the kids to save “Spaceship Earth”! By 1947 he was thrown into an insane asylum! After 3 escapes, he landed in California where he started his soap business! He died in 1997, completely blind and was not a real doctor! His sons took over the business! READ YOUR BOTTLE label while on the bowl! It’s all there!

Ok, so what are these 18 uses?! They are not all listed on the label or the site, but here’s what I came up with: (!)

1. Facial and body soap!
2. Human shampoo!
3. Pet shampoo!
4. Floor soap!
5. Dishwashing!
6. Laundry!
7. Toothpaste!
8. Mouthwash!
9. Bubble bath!
10. Massage oil!
11. Baby oil!
12. Shaving cream!
13. Denture cleaner!
14. Car cleaner!
15. Toilet cleaner!
16. Sun tan oil!
17. Peppermint as mouse deterrent!
18. Lavender as moth and ant deterrent!

Beware the Greenwashing

Beware the Greenwashing published on

grass.jpg

I’ve said it a thousand times before: Don’t get taken in by “greenwashing”. Look, I’m an environmentalist because I like animals better than people and I’m into green building because I like old crap better than new. So yeah, save the planet and recycle, salvage, yada, yada. But let’s tell it like it is.

So when I read the Forbes article on greenwashing, I was all “Yeah, that’s right!” They talk about “hidden trade-offs” in materials such as concrete and carpeting. Concrete will last forever once it’s installed, however the cement production isn’t too environmentally friendly. On the other hand, carpeting can be produced in an eco-friendly fashion, but the upkeep takes more energy than a wood floor. It collects more dust, which requires more vacuuming. Unless of course, you choose to ignore it.

And here’s why I loved the article. They say “older is greener”. I know, it’s obvious, but perhaps not to everyone. The key is to salvage your existing material and turn it into something beautiful, unique and inexpensive.

Virginia based Gusto Di Vita Coffee announced its new ‘BizPod’ Coffee kiosks which are made from recycled shipping containers. These are meant to be more functional than the Adam Kalkin Illy container. They can be transported almost anywhere and will stand up to extreme weather.

The Gusto Di Vita Coffee BizPods are more energy efficient than their previous models. The containers are finished with space age ceramic insulation paint externally; compact spray foam insulation internally and LED lighting throughout. New packages in the works include Coffee BizPods with PV solar generators and solar heating systems.

Oddly, I can’t find anywhere on the site whether or not the coffee is fair trade, shade grown.

Thatched Roofs

Thatched Roofs published on

bethlehem_big2.jpg

I see thatched roof cottages in Ireland all the time and always wonder why we don’t have more of them here. Is it a dying craft? Perhaps. But I did find one local guy who specializes in thatched roofs.

Master Thatcher Colin McGhee, from Essex, England started thatching at the age of 16. He’s been working in the US since 1991 and is based in Virginia (although his area code is 845).

European thatch dates back to the middle ages when the first villages were established. Here in the states, Native Americans were using thatch for generations before early settlers started to during the 60’s. 1560’s, that is.

Reed and straw are the two most common choices of thatching. Material has to be gathered, dried, bundled, and secured the roof in thick layers. It’s weather resistant, fire proof and easily repaired. The commonly used Norfolk reed has an R value of 40.

I’m not sure this is something I’d attempt myself on a house (maybe an outhouse or something) but there is a DIY section on McGhee’s site.

Hey, if a green roof dries out and dies, would it look like a thatched roof?

F*in Florida. The state is like a wart on the ass of America. Here are some things I’ve witnessed while being stuck down here. A few from my own parent’s home. Someone should be teaching these seniors how to live a greener lifestyle. But it ain’t gonna be me.

1. Hummers. Lots of ’em.

2. Lack of low flow shower heads. I injured myself in the shower this morning after being blasted by the force of the water. Nearly tore off a nipple. WTF?

3. They love their styrofoam!

4. LED bulbs? What’s that?

5. Air Conditioning. I couldn’t live without it in this heat either. But the thermostats can’t be programmed? So you leave it on the entire day so the house will be cool when you get home? And my personal favorite: Leave those windows wide open!

6. BJ’s, Sam’s Club = Lots of wasted food.

7. No bike lanes

8. Sneaking out to water the lawn in the middle of the night due to water restrictions.

9. Leave the car running while standing.

10. Global warming? No such thing!

Looks like Green 4U just launched last month, so we can still catch up on the tips they have to offer. It’s kind of a “how to” blog. How to go green.

Tips include eating less meat (although the blogger is not a vegetarian), green tax deductions and intro to solar power. There is a whole section on how to contact your state and federal officials.

Blogger Leigh states “I am not a crunchy granola hippy living on a commune. I want to give the average person resources to make more informed decision on how they can improve (or at least not hurt) the environment.
