The end of summer is near.  Have you gotten your flea on yet?  Better hurry!  Labor Day weekend may be your last chance for some of the best outdoor antiques markets.  Here are some markets close enough to NYC that are worth the trip.

Stormville, NY.  August 30 & 31.

Pound Ridge, Westchester. Monday, September 1st.

Brimfield starts on Tuesday, September 2nd. There will be pre-shows there over the weekend but if you have any time off left, take it to hit the main show.  You won’t be sorry!

Englishtown NJ Auction is on every Saturday and Sunday and is also open on Monday for Labor Day.  It’s a mix of schlock new and some great vintage finds.  Vendors don’t pay a lot for their spaces, so at least they don’t feel the need to up the price just to pay for the rent.

Ok, so Elephant’s Trunk in CT is not just a Labor Day weekend show either, but it’s a flea market must, so this weekend would be as good as any.  Only open on Sunday.

Yes, it’s true.  The Antiques Garage in Chelsea is no more.  Sadly, yesterday was closing day.  It’s the end of an era that kind of already ended with the closing of the original Chelsea flea market many years ago.  The real estate monster must eat to survive.  Expect to see a high rise condo with a bank or Starbucks on the ground floor.

Annex Markets still run the 25th Street flea and Hell’s Kitchen.  Hopefully they’ll be around for awhile, so support them while you can!

I guess you could say that flea marketing is in my blood.  In the mid 80’s, I made a line of earrings out of my mini photographs and called it “Ear Prints”.  I sold on the street in front of Tower Records (sometimes with Emilia), at craft shows and I was a regular vendor at the Columbus Avenue Green Market.  This Sunday, I’ll be returning to my roots with some pieces larger than the jewelry.

It was never my intention to go the flea market route ever again but I got a bit overzealous with my shopping and now need to thin out the store.  It would probably be a good idea if people were able to turn around in there.

So, if you’re in Brooklyn this weekend, say hello to Emilia at the shop.  And if you’re on the Upper West Side, come see me (Phyllis) at the market on Columbus and 76th.  I’ll be the one furniture small enough for a single schlepper to manage.

You know it’s officially Spring when the flea markets come back…along with the allergies. Some outdoor markets tough it out through the winter. Special shout out to Green Flea and Annex Market vendors for struggling through the cold this year. Maybe one of the reasons Manhattan is still Borough #1, although this Brooklynite hates to admit it.

Back in the boroughs, the Brooklyn Flea is starting up again this weekend. All of them. I can’t even keep track anymore. It’s a fleanopoly.

Queens gets going with the Long Island City Flea this Saturday and Sunday.

No offense to The Bronx and Staten Island but I don’t know their markets. Anyone want to post one? Comments, please.

Upstate and Connecticut are “springing” into action again too.

The Beacon Flea is back this Sunday. Can’t beat that backdrop (photo above).

Nearby is the new Dutchess Marketplace, which I checked out back in March when they were just starting out. Huge space, great vendors but a weird layout. Mix of old and new.

Up the road a bit is the Elephant’s Trunk. Get there early! It’s a 7am-2pm market. None of this NYC late start crap. Worth getting up early.

Me? I think I’ma gonna hit the upstate ones. Wake up at the crack of dawn, put some miles on my car. Schlepp around aimlessly and get some great merch for the shop. All in a day’s work.

Ah, the end of the outdoor flea season is upon us. This Saturday will be the last outdoor flea in Ft. Greene. Starting the weekend after Thanksgiving, the Brooklyn Flea continues through the winter at 1 Hanson on Saturdays and Sundays. And don’t forget the Gifted market!

Me? I’m still trying to get rid of the larger pieces I brought back from the Beacon house. Oh, how I do miss the large space.

I’m just kind of putting together some pieces, but not painting/finishing them as I don’t have time and it’s hard to get the price for the work involved these days. I’ll have suggested prices on the furniture, but it’s “make me an offer day”!

The desk above is an old tool box sitting on top of porch balusters. We bought a bunch of salvaged balusters when we were redoing our porch, but decided to keep the original shingle design. I’m thinking $90 OBO.

Hey, whaddayaknow? More balusters! This antique sled makes a fab bench or low table. $85 OBO. Keep an eye out for baluster candlesticks and baluster frames this holiday season.

Other leftover stuff I need to purge:

This sweet mid century repainted coffee table has been sitting in the attic for a year. $75 marked down from $90 or best offer.

Ooh, I forgot I had one of these school chairs left. They were selling for $55 last year. Um…$40?

I have 3 matching marble/cherub tables I got from my cousin. I don’t have room for all 3. This side table…$95. Ask about the other side table or fabulous 8 cherub coffee table if interested. All Italian marble, circa 1950’s/60’s.

I’m on the fence about selling these two gals. They looked great in my Beacon house and they seem a little out of place in the Bed Stuy home, but I still love them. I’d part with them for about $150 apiece, but maybe not much less.

The Stormville Airport Antique Show and Flea Market in Dutchess County takes place on holiday weekends during the warmer months. Since next Monday is Columbus Day, the fair is on this Saturday and Sunday, October 9th and 10th.

There are usually a couple of hundred antiques vendors (that’s a guess) and an area set up near the entrance for new stuff. Admission and parking are free. Vendor’s prices are pretty fair. The only thing I would suggest is getting there way early (like 6:30am) as there is only one road leading to the show and it gets backed up.

It took us moving out of the area to participate, but Reclaimed Home has a booth this weekend. Look for us in site #10, driveway 3. We’ll be emptying out our Beacon house and trying to cram everything into our Brooklyn home of half the size. Much of the furniture for sale is from our own private “estate” (I’m gonna add an LOL here just so you know that’s tongue in cheek).

The flea market inventory we’re bringing is stuff we never want to see again, so prices will be good, especially by the end of the second day. In fact, if you’re a vendor or just some hoarder who wants a bunch of crap, come see us on Sunday afternoon and we’ll make a deal for everything that’s left over.

Here’s what we have…(Bear with me. The only images I have of our personal items are real estate shots.)

That red couch is probably 1920’s/30’s. We bought it in Brooklyn reupholstered. After moving it to Kingston then Beacon and living with it for 6 plus years, the fabric isn’t brand new anymore. Good but not excellent condition. $300

Bought this Eastlake rocker at a shop in Beacon. Paid $350 and would like to get as close as possible. It is comfy!

See that bed? That was our guest room bed. We no longer need it since we don’t have a guest room. Deco. Decent condition. Full. If you’re not paranoid about bed bugs (there aren’t any) we can throw in the mattress and box spring. $110. We also have some twin frames and a Mid Century Queen headboard.

We’re asking $150 for the enamel table. See those chairs in the picture? We have 6 of them. They were our dining room chairs that we bought at Stormville when we first moved into the Beacon house. They never really matched our dining room table (which we’re keeping). Anyhoo, we paid $750 for the set of 6 and will take best offer. They’re English, 1800’s. Disclosure: Our dog chewed a corner of one of them.

Speaking of chairs, we have 4 painted brown ones that would match the table if repainted white. We’ll sell them with table for $200, entire set if ya want.

Antique wood burning stove from Beacon farm house. Needs a good sandblasting or wire brushing and some spray paint. $250

Mid Century reproduction lamps. A guy. A gal. And a whole lotta kitsch. This was actually from my cousin’s house and I have to do right by them. $175 for the pair.

So, you should come to the show. But if there’s anything you’re interested in, let us know and we won’t schlep it to Stormville for nothing.

Gonna be hawking my wares at a new (ish) market this Sunday. The Hester Street Fair is only a few months young, but both shoppers and vendors seem to be happy enough with it so far.

Like the Brooklyn Flea (Hello, I’ll be there on Saturday!), it’s semi-curated with a mix of vintage, crafts and not-your-average-sausage-fair-food. Hester has about 60 vendors on a given weekend and is open on Saturdays and Sundays.

My grandfather was a rag man on the Lower East Side when he arrived in this country. Looks like I’m taking the family history back a step. Wait till you hear about the seltzer delivery I’m hooking up…..

My grandparents are in their graves ROFLTAO.

This Saturday I was back selling at the Ft. Greene Brooklyn Flea after an extended absence to work on my house. It was kind of nice to go away and come back because it made me appreciate it even more.

The photo above shows a sampling of upcycled light fixtures by Peg and Jon Van Dyne. It’s one of those things that makes me say “Damn, why didn’t I think of that first?” Because I checking out the market only for a few minutes when I was on a an extended bathroom break, I didn’t get a chance to get much info. The company is called French Vanilla. No website, but the phone number is 765-513-0255. No idea what prices are like, but I did notice that they take credit cards.

That large film reel on the right? Still has film on it.

Fat Dog Fabrication is living in this century. Owner Don Wood has a website. A rather cute one, with a photo of Henry the fat dog on the main page (He doesn’t look so fat). Don also has an Etsy store .

I didn’t get a chance to have a chat (another bathroom break) but I gathered from the internets that Don is a contractor who creates on the side. He uses recycled materials when he can, such as the pallet bench. The prices are surprisingly low for the quality, concept and location. $25 hand made concrete dog bowl/planter in Brooklyn? I think I spent that on a cup of coffee just yesterday.

After a short holiday hiatus, Reclaimed Home will finally be returning to the world of winter fleadom. Brooklyn Flea at One Hanson (aka The Willamsburgh Savings Bank) has been packed to the rafters with vendors, but they managed to squeeze me in for this Sunday.

So, come visit! I’ll be in space #35. That’s the gorgeous main floor. There are 3 levels of vintage and handmade vendors, plus I think they are adding some more food vendors this week!

I did have a chance to shop Gifted on a slow weekday last week. I bought a ton of recycled vintage clothes from Grace Napoleon. I don’t see any of her upcycled creations on her Etsy shop. Probably because she sold out because they are so fabulous.

Grace takes old hoodies and sweaters and matches them with vintage fabric to create one of a kind dresses and hide-the-fat blouses. Priced under $100.

I have about 50 vintage salt and pepper shakers to sell at Gifted. I’ve been buying them on eBay like crazy because I’m freaking out that I won’t have enough handmade items to sell. Every time I open a box of these babies, I laugh, I cry…some of these are just too cute!

There are tons and tons of cute animals I’ve priced at around $15 per pair. I thought these were particularly unique and therefore tacked some extra $$ on to them.

Yes, I stood out in the rain to do the Brooklyn Flea on Saturday. Let’s not focus on that. Instead, let’s talk dolls. As I was setting up, I saw these fascinating beings and dropped everything to run over and have a closer look. Suprina of 2nd Souls creates sculptures from found objects that belong in galleries and museums, not at flea markets where people say “Uh, would you take $25 for that?”

I did the Dumbo market on Sunday and guess who was my next door neighbor? Suprina! I was all like “Yeah, go get something to eat. I’ll watch your stuff.” So, I got to spend the day looking at these awesome creatures and chatting with my long lost sister from the Planet of Discarded Dolls.

An interior designer by day, she only recently started focusing on her art work. She is drawn to society’s castaways and reincarnates these abandoned objects so they can live amongst us once again. The little sculptures start at around $45. Something more elaborate carries a $1500 price tag. Suprina also does customized portraits.

To make ends meet at the market, Suprina offers small reclaimed wood boxes and vases in the $30 price range. The weathered wood fits in perfectly with the battle-scarred effigies. The boxes are not up on her website yet.

New kid on the block, Squish is a small, intimate, indoor monthly market in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The next event is coming up on October 24th. It will be their third since opening their doors.

Squish features live music as well as the market. Admission is free to the public.

They are currently looking for creative vendors. A six foot table is $110 per event. You can sign up here. Spaces still available for this month.

Every week there seems to be a new flea market popping up around town. The Brooklyn Flea has been such a success that everyone with a backyard thinks they can start one. There are a number of smaller markets that couldn’t even find enough vendors, no less shoppers. They died before they ever even got off the ground. Without the perfect location and marketing, how can they expect to survive?
