Coney Seaside Concerts

The Seaside Summer Concert series @ Coney Island always has at least a little bit of awesomeness in store. Washed up has beens? Perhaps. But they can still rock. Past performances included The B-52’s, Blondie with Pat Benetar, The Village People, Donna Summer, KC & The Sunshine Band and Liza. With a Z.

So the full calendar isn’t up yet, but it looks like the must see concert this year will be Aretha on August 12. I’m also groovin’ to The Beach Boys with Mickey Dolenz. I had a big crush on Mickey D when I was young. I know, I know…Davy Jones was the cute one.

Anyway, all shows are free, as always. They get really crowded. Public transit is the way to go. Parking is tough.

See ya there!

East Side of the Hudson

Bannerman Castle Tours. We did the Bannerman kayak tour last year. It was great (except for the weather). You don’t have to kayak. There are larger vessel trips for the youngun’s and elders but there is some uphill walking involved and this is a hard hat trip.

Pow Wow on the Hudson, Wappingers. I see this advertised every year, but have never been. I’m worried it might be like the time I really, really wanted to go to the Renaissance Faire for a laugh but it was all WTF and not much fun.

Mario’s Biggest Yard Sale Evah! You’ve seen several Mario posts here before. The guy’s got the goods…and the prices are right. Flickr set.

Stormville Flea Market. Only happens a few times a year, usually on 3 day holiday weekends. Huge market for antiques dealers and some crap vendors. Huge.

Prisoner of Second Avenue at the Ghent Playhouse. Ooh, one of my favorite movies! Jack Lemmon, Anne Bancroft? Of course, this is a live performance of the Neil Simon play.

West Side of the Hudson

New Paltz Crafts Fair. An annual trip for me. Every year since we’ve lived upstate, the same Boston via Dublin friends come to stay with us for the weekend. Every year, this is what they want to do. I enjoyed it the first 2 years, but it’s the same country craftsy vendors every year. On the other hand, not a bad way to spend your day outdoors.

East Durham Irish Festival. Probably a thousand times goofier than the Pow Wow. I’m not allowed to go, what with 3 Dubliners in tow. I wouldn’t be able to sustain the complaints and sarcasm. And I’m a New Yorker!

Rip Lives Festival. Ok, so they’re a little Rip Van Winkle obsessed in parts of the Hudson Valley. That’s ok, he was a cool guy. Some Catskill towns will have local Rip-themed art on display for public viewing during the summer months. The outdoor exhibit ends with an auction in Tannersville on October 2nd.

Eco Friendly Expo

The Eco Friendly Expo opens today for previews and runs through Thursday, May 27th in Midtown. Cost is $10 to get in or free for the trade.

There will be green lectures on art, products and lifestyle all day Wednesday and Thursday. Plus, of course as any good expo has, plenty of exhibitors.

Among the exhibitors are 2nd SoulEco Supply Center and Cardboard Design. There also some WTF booths, including CNN, The Bloomberg Administration and Corcoran.

Brooklyn Summer Concerts!

Wow, there are some awesome concerts coming up in Brooklyn this summer! I’m gonna have me a biz-zy schedule!

Coming up on May 19th at the Music Hall of Williamsburg….the legendary PIL! The show was originally set for Terminal 5, but they moved it to a more intimate venue because they are filming a documentary.

The Open Space Alliance is hosting the following concerts at The Williamsburg Waterfront. Tickets on sale at Ticketmaster for around $30-40.

June 20: Band of Horses

June 25: Silversun Pickups

July 2 & 5: Faith No More (benefit)

July 16: Weezer

July 23: Modest Mouse

July 29: Primus & GOGOL BORDELLO (!!!!!!!)

July 31: Nas & Damian Marley (benefit)

Celebrate Brooklyn at The Prospect Park Bandshell opens up on June 9th with Nora Jones. There’s a whole load of world music, dance and jazz. Some really good stuff, but the only band this middle-aged-I-think-I’m-still-a-teen-who-listens-to-poppy-rocky-music-woman wants to see is Sonic Youth on July 31.

Coney Island Seaside 2010 season has not been announced yet.

Over the weekend I started pulling furniture out of my garage to get ready for the yard sale. I set up a little makeshift outdoor “studio” to shoot the merch.

It’s kind of cool how the chairs almost seem lifelike as they sit waiting for some tlc. All of them are old and raggedy and have seen better days. The chippy paint and cracks are like human wrinkles that tell the story of life’s experiences.

Yeah, I know it’s a load of crap. I’m just too tired to write anything else.

So….The Beacon 2 BK Moving Sale is this Saturday, April 10th. 10-5pm. Sure, come early, but that means we’re putting you to work hauling things. Don’t think you’re gonna come early to shop, bee-atches!

Address: 1189 North Avenue. That’s Rt. 9-D, south side. Park around the corner as there is no street parking and this is a driveway sale. The house is walking distance from Metro North and we may just be open to delivery.

This Week’s Events

Lots going on this week, in both the city and Hudson Valley.

Let’s start with something that made my jaw drop because I have nothing but fond memories of this guy. Dan Aykroyd will be autographing bottles of his own Crystal Head Vodka (Yes, he has a vodka company now!). Where? Viscount Wines in Wappingers Falls. When? Wednesday, March 17th, 1-3pm. How cool is that? I want to be a total goof and go, but must-keep-working-on-house.

hvrest.jpg

Now, I know you won’t trek all the way to Wappingers just to see Dan Aykroyd, but here’s something else for you. It’s Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. March 15th-28th. There are over 140 participating restaurants from Westchester all the way up to Columbia County. Check it out.

bkdine.jpg

But wait! It’s also Dine in Brooklyn week, March 15-25. Over 200 participating restaurants all over the borough.

gogreen.jpg

The Go Green Expo is this weekend, starting on Friday, March 19th. It takes place at Pier 92. Annoying celeb guest speakers will include Ed Begley Jr, Mathew Modine and Mariel Hemingway. Gosh, is the green movement really that uncool? I’d rather be drinking vodka with Dan Aykroyd. But seriously, it should be a great event!

One more unofficial event I’d like to add. It’s going to be a nice weekend. What’s better than a house painting party? Y’all invited to Beacon to come help work on the house! Yay! See you there.

Can’t believe how lame I’ve been about blogging. Well, it’s not gonna get any better. Now Gifted is open every day until Christmas eve. No more Mondays and Tuesdays off. Not that I updated this blog on those days. And it’s open until 8pm most nights except Wednesdays, which is the 9pm free beer nights.

I’m so tired.

Well, I’ve got nothing to say. Just wanted to post SOMETHING.

Hope y’all well!

On Saturday, Kristi and I went over to Tenafly to shoot some of the items that will be sold on tag sale day. The date will be November 13 & 14. No worries, you’ll be reminded again and again.

The couple did much of the work for us already. They have things grouped and sorted. The woman even washed her dusty stemware and folded everything perfectly. I told her she shouldn’t get upset when people tear through the house and disturb everything within 5 minutes. These people are clean and organized! Takes all the fun out of rummaging, but it’s a good thing.

4023036885_da94134aef.jpg

We found out we were the fourth people to be interviewed for the sale. So, why us? Seems that tag sale proprietors warrant about as much respect as the used car salesman or realtor. Upon looking for recommendations, “the client” heard horror stories about tag sales gone awry. One friend had the tag woman refuse to give her money because she wanted to renegotiate her fee AFTER the sale. Many of the “taggers” in that area were of retirement age and not internet savvy.

After doing a few sales, I have this to say. It’s physically hard work and long hours, but anyone can do it. It takes someone fairly intelligent to do it well (Good thing Kristi is around). As with any business, if you’re not willing to change with the times (Hello, learn the computer!), you’re not going to keep up.

And that’s why us novices were hired over guys with years of experience.

So, back to the sale stuff. Not too many antiques. The gently used furniture is good quality, no Ikea crap. There are some tv’s and stereo equipment, gym equipment….We’ll list more as we go back and sort more out.

Overall picture: quality stuff, perfect condition, free of dust.

New kid on the block, Squish is a small, intimate, indoor monthly market in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The next event is coming up on October 24th. It will be their third since opening their doors.

Squish features live music as well as the market. Admission is free to the public.

They are currently looking for creative vendors. A six foot table is $110 per event. You can sign up here. Spaces still available for this month.

Kristi of Here Be Old Things and I have been contemplating tag/estate sales. We’ve emailed. We conversed over the phone. We even had an in person meeting on the subject. But it never got off the ground because we both take on more than we can handle.

Until now. Well, wait, that’s not right. We’re DEFINITELY taking on more than we can handle, but the universe is lighting a fire under our butts to focus on our tag team effort.

Save the date! We just met with our first Kristi/Phyllis tag sale client yesterday and it’s a go!

The sale will be the first weekend of November in Tenafly, NJ.

Some of the more awesome items include original Americana posters by Howard Chandler Christy and L. Helquera and a pair of mid century Alan Gould string chairs.

There’s also an 8′ Eliminator pool table! I learned something about moving pool tables though. Apparently, you really do need a reputable pool table mover to take it apart and put it back together. Bummer, because I wanted to strap that baby to my back and haul it home.

I’m staying up in Beacon this weekend where there is a lot going on (plus I have to shoot a wedding). As much as I’m happy to partake in the events up here, I’m kind of bummed about missing out on the Brooklyn festivities.

Such as….The First Annual Brooklyn Bridge Pup Crawl! A moonlit dog walk across the Brooklyn Bridge that benefits animal shelters across the country. The ONE weekend I’m not in Brooklyn, dammit! I know, I can always donate to the shelter, but I wanna do a mass dog walk across the bridge!

snapshot.jpg

The 13th Annual Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival: this weekend. It’s a three day, multi site event featuring up and coming artists working in any and all mediums. An artist by the name of Steve Chen will be doing lights. He bought a bunch of fixtures and other stuff from me for this event. Keep an eye out for him!

I saw the above post on the Brownstoner forum. Personally, I shouldn’t even be looking at more salvage, but man, I wish I could go to that sale!

Back in Beacon, there’s plenty going on even though it’s not Second Saturday. Beacon Open Studios is a 3 day event. There’s a kick off party tonight, a closing party on Sunday and in between getting drunk, you can look at some art.

Finally: Hey, anyone remember this guy? If not, watch this. He’s still around…and in Beacon on Saturday at the Howland! I hear he doesn’t want to bother with us local girls though.

There’s a whole load of stuff going on in Dutchess County on Saturday. I won’t be around, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be hating myself for having to work.

Mario is holding an estate sale in Fishkill on Saturday. It’s an elderly woman’s house clean out, which means….lot’s of old stuff! Looks like this woman had some decent mid century thang going on. Wacky website. Click on the calendar/image to the left for more photos.

The Beacon Citizen’s Network is calling this month the “most action packed Second Saturday ever”. A couple of cool events: Etsy’s Handmade Cavalcade will be up here and Common Grounds Farm will host “Brunch in the Field”.

Last Days of Summer

Can we all agree that summer sucked arse this year? It’s over now. I have my windows closed overnight and I’m wearing sweaters. It’ll be time to crank up the heat by next week.

Summer ’09 brought us some cool events, though. And we still have some things going on, even if you have to sport your Carhardt to enjoy.

Tomorrow at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Butch and Sundance. 6pm

Warriors, come out to play-ay with Ferris Bueller and Molly Ringwald! Dreamland Roller Rink, Coney Island. Warrior party Sept. 5th. Month long John Hughes marathon (ugh, I missed Pretty in Pink!). Sept. 6th is Ferris, Sixteen Candles on the 13th and so on.

Another year has gone by since tragedy struck the city. There are many events taking place on September 11th. Some reflective, some having nothing to do with the towers. The big news is the Jay Z concert at Madison Square Garden. Sounds like it will be a big deal.

On September 12th, Christie’s is hosting a complimentary champagne brunch. Just in case you plan on freeloading, this is for registered wine sale bidders and you are encouraged to bring a bottle to share. Doesn’t say you can’t bring Night Train and start bidding at $2.

Catskill Animal Sanctuary

The mom is visiting. She’s 78 years old and doesn’t do steps. She wakes up after 8am and sits around in her house frock for a couple of hours before she’s ready to leave the house. She can’t eat “spicy” foods and her back and feet start to hurt if she walks to much.

So, what to do? I tried to plan an agenda before she arrived so we wouldn’t be sitting around looking at each other. When she visits (from Florida, where else?) I tend to slow down to her beat, calling it a night after our early bird dinner at 5pm.

Here are some senior friendly activities I have planned…

Tonight we’re going to the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. No, she doesn’t really care for Shakespeare (her words) but I talked her into it, telling her it wasn’t the usual stuffy Bard production. We’ll picnic on the grounds before the show, overlooking the Hudson. Of course I’m bringing a folding chair so she doesn’t have to sit on the ground.

On Saturday we’ll take a drive up to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. I’ll introduce her to Phyllis the Chicken if he’s still there and we’ll meet all the other farm animals. If her feet can hold her, we’ll check out Opus 40 as well.

We’re visiting family on The iLand on Sunday, but we’ll probably swing by the Dumbo flea market before hand.

Next Thursday, July 30th is Frankie Valli and Connie Francis at Seaside Concerts. I’m bringing extra prune juice so we can party into the night.

The following day it’s back to The iLand for a weekend in The Hamptons with other cousins. We’re rushing back on Sunday to lunch with yet another cousin at the Vegas Diner.

I was going to get West Side Story tickets, but I heard from a couple of people that this production wasn’t the best. Rave reviews for In the Heights, but I’m fearful of trying something new with her. You know how those seniors can be.

Still looking for more to do on those off days if anyone has non-touristy suggestions!

NYC Restaurant Week: 9 Days Left

NYC Restaurant Week: 9 Days Left published on

Oops, totally forgot about restaurant week! Lucky for me, restaurant week lasts for 3 weeks, ending on July 31st. Over 250 restaurants are participating this year, serving 3 course lunch for $24.07 and dinner for $35. Menus are posted (warning: PDF files) and reservations are strongly suggested.

So, what have we got? I’m going for the vegetarian options here. Carnivores, do your own research.

Asia de Cuba has a marinated crispy tofu entree.

Fig & Olive is offering a main course of penne with cremini mushrooms, black truffle paste and white truffle oil.

Over at Ilili Lebanese restaurant, it looks like you have a choice of anything on their menu.

Tribeca Grill is serving up an entree of herbed ricotta raviolini with braised artichokes, fava beans and cherry tomatoes.

And that’s just a small sampling.

So. Hungry. Now.
