To the Moon!

To the Moon! published on

 apollo-large1.jpg

What will you do to celebrate the anniversary of the moon landing, if anything? Well, here are some local activities, kids!

The Hayden Planetarium, of course. Whoopie Goldberg narrates the current space show “Journey to the Stars“. Showtimes are every half hour. If you’ve never been to the planetarium, shame on you. Disclosure: I’ve only ever seen rock laser light shows, but still….I was there! Take time to visit the museum too!

Swing out to Bethpage, Long Island for some activities at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The museum houses an IMAX theater as well as permanent and special exhibits.

The NY Hall of Science in Queens features “Rocket Park”, a 5000 square foot outdoor exhibition.

Leave the kiddies home for tonight’s burlesque show at Public Assembly in Williamsburg. Clams Casino and Neil “Armstrong” O’Fortune present striptease artists/conspiracy experts to uncover the plot to fake the moon landing.

Plan ahead! On July 30 @ 11am, The Intrepid will host a talk with NYC native and astronaut Mike Massimino. Fun fact: Mike was the first human to tweet from space.

Some wine connoisseurs pair wine with cheese or meals, but Soho’s City Winery pairs wine with music.

Just found out about tonight’s event via Gothamlist. Stevie Wonder! “Songs for the Cup of Life”. 30 wines. 30 tunes. 30 bucks.

This is not a live Stevie performance, but check the City Winery calendar for those. They do have some pretty decent live events.

I have to say that I’m more obsessed with Facebook than with Twitter. I can’t help it that I find my friends more interesting and talented than total strangers. (No offense, Twits!) I get my news from Facebook. I do my socializing on Facebook. And today I’m getting my blog post from Facebook.

Check it out…

This Sunday, the 21st at Public Assembly in Williamsburg.

“The United States of Consciousness” is a Multimedia Experience with live art, video projections, performance and music. My buddy Dave Barry of Toasters fame (& other great NYC ska bands) will be keyboarding it up with Andrew Zapanta. Only $5 suggested donation.

Anne Pope of Sustainable Flatbush alerted friends to a Clothing Swap with her “like” thumb icon. This takes place on June 27th from 3-6pm at the Wow Cafe in the East Village. $5 donation for trades and $10 if you don’t have stuff to give.

Nicole from Brooklyn Based has been living in London for the past year while keeping her awesomely informative blog going. She’s returning home in July but wants to know “Anyone in NYC want to do a three month (or more) swap for a fabulous North London apartment?” Tempting, but too bad Europeans get quadruple the vacation time.

6011_ch002666_img_00_0000.jpg

Speaking of England, yet another friend is trying to move back to NY. Vintage peddler Marie asks “Anyone interested in buying a 2-bed apartment in Manchester England?” They’re asking £79,950 and it looks totally cute! Fun fact: Marie’s hubby was in a band with pre-Smiths Morrissey.

I emailed invitations and posted it to the Brooklyn Blogade Google group, but I never posted it here. Wow, I’m losing it.

Reclaimed Home is hosting the rolling Brooklyn Blogade on June 28 @ 11am. It will be at Kush in Clinton Hill, hopefully in the lovely back yard.

There are usually themes and/or guest speakers for such meetings, but guess who hasn’t gotten her act together yet? Morgan of Save Bedford Stuyvesant may co-host with me IF he can wake up early enough that Sunday. I’ve also asked my web designer, Veronica of Nose Round Productions, to speak.  She always has her pulse on the next big thang since she’s only a 20 something.

At any rate, it will be good company and good food. Wanna come? RSVP here. If you already did, I got it.

Outdoor Summer Concerts

It finally feels like Spring today and I’m looking forward to some outdoor fun. What beats seeing your favorite band live minus the smell of sweat, stale beer and smoke? Nuthin’, I tell ya!

Jones Beach is such a great venue for a show. We caught Depeche Mode there a few years ago and I’m still raving about it. The seating and acoustics are above average and the ocean breeze is unbeatable. This year they have Kid Rock and New Kids on the Block, Aerosmith with ZZ Top, some heavy metal and a splash of pop. Although Blink 182 is the only concert I’d travel to Long Island for, the line up isn’t bad…No Doubt, Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction. Eh.

Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park bandshell is F-R-E-E, with a suggested admission of just $ 3. Some of the shows are benefits and require a $30 ticket purchase. We paid thirty bucks one year to see Cake and Flaming Lips in the rain and were peeved that people parked themselves just outside the fence and saw the same concert for free. Anyway, they were worth the ticket price. Here’s what you do. Bring a picnic. Hang out. Cheap, awesome evening. Some 2009 performers: David Byrne, TV on the Radio, Burning Spear, Buckwheat Zydeco and Big Daddy Kane.

Central Park SummerStage has an eclectic selection of performances ranging from spoken word to comedy dance to music. A Ziggy Marley benefit concert is sold out, as is TV on the Radio. Josh Ritter with NY Pops is playing, so is Matisyahu and Q Tip.

You’ll have to download the PDF to see the River to River Festival event calendar. There’s some folk, ballet and movies going on. The one that caught my eye is The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 on July 13th. The original! That is one of the best NYC movies of all time!

The Seaside Concerts in Coney Island isn’t updated with the 2009 schedule, but keep an eye on those. There’s always something wonderful at the Seaside.

McCarren Park still has the 2008 schedule up, which I just got excited about until I realized this is 2009.

Last week I posted Mario’s Estate Sale. Due to weather and personal issues, they put the sale off until this Saturday. So, if you didn’t make it, you have a second chance!

Here’s some cut and paste…..”If you’re heading north for the weekend, Mario of those Mario and Reclaimed Home estate sales is holding a tag sale at his house in Beacon. He’s partnering up with Iron Fish Mark this time, who just closed his eclectic vintage/antiques shop on Main Street. They have tons of goodies filling up the 2 story garage space. And Mario always prices things to SELL! It’s at 69 Verplanck, this Saturday. Rain date is May 16.”

It’s been a crappy weather all week (although there is something bright in the sky today), but still….Spring is in the air! Can you feel it? I can. That’s why I never leave home without my supply of Allegra. Anyhoo, there’s a lot going on this week.

blogfest.jpg

Starting with….The Blogfest! Yeah, that’s tomorrow. Come get support, praise and beer from fellow bloggers. It’s the annual event where we get to pat ourselves on the back for a job well done. Who’s going? I’ll be hosting a break off schmooze group after the formal speeches and I don’t want to look unpopular, so come say hello!

bkdes.jpg

Brooklyn Designs 2009 goes from May 8-10. Maybe I’ll actually make it there this year. All the wonderful, gorgeous up and coming designer stuff I can’t afford.

BTW, May 9th is Second Saturday in Beacon, meaning all of the art galleries and shops are open late and serving up some free wine. There’s also an open house at Common Ground Farm from 9am-12pm and a frock swap. But the best thing is, if you spend the night in Beacon, you can help work on our porch on Sunday!

Back in Brooklyn, May 9th is the grand opening of the Park Slope Flea. That’s in Park Slope South, to be exact. On 5th Ave, just above 20th Street.

What am I doing? I’ll be working. I’ll have my usual space at the daddy of all fleas this Saturday.

The English Beat for a Good Cause

The English Beat for a Good Cause published on 1 Comment on The English Beat for a Good Cause

The English Beat is on my top 5 list of favorite bands ever. So when I saw that a Facebook buddy linked to a concert they were playing locally, I jumped at the chance to get tickets. Never mind that I initially purchased tickets for the wrong night and had to exchange them. It’s all good now.The Beat (as my Irish husband insists on calling them) is playing 3 nights at Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ. The first night, May 13th is a fundraising event for the Five P Minus Society, an organization set up to help support families of children born with this rare genetic defect.

3rdbday.jpg

Jude Chavez was born with 5P- Sydrome aka Cri du Chat. Fortunately for him and others like him, his parents are taking positive steps to educate the public and increase awareness about the disorder. So, how did they get The Beat to play their benefit? Jude’s mother, Barbara, a long time fan, just approached the lead singer, Dave Wakeling and asked him after a concert last year. And he said yes!

Dave Wakeling will be on hand for photos and autographs for a donation. You can also bid to perform with the band! How cool is that? Tickets are $75 for this event and $25 for the regular concert on other nights. But I know you’ll splurge for this because you’re not selfish bastards.

So come, see a great concert (They are terrific in concert!), meet the band, dance, nosh, schmooze and do it all in the name of a good cause!

You know those goofy home shows that take place in school auditorium or civic centers? Yeah, well, the Architectural Digest Home Show is probably slightly better than those.

This year’s show takes place at Pier 94 starting on March 26th. Apart from the exhibitors, there are design and culinary seminars and a sustainability conference.

Dude, you should go.

Here we go again! So, now that we pretty much have all of our tag sale inventory in place, I can tell you what we’ve got.

Garage full of inexpensive furniture and smalls. Let’s put it this way….I buy from Mario (guy whose garage it is) to sell at The Brooklyn Flea. I consider my flea prices to be pretty fair and I still have quite the mark up. So, here you are cutting out the middle gal (Hey wait, that’s me!) and getting it directly from “the guy”. The garage is 2 floors packed with stuff.

Inside the house are the finer quality items, if you will. Some incredibly cool things:

3342099337_6dd93896eb.jpg

* Antique marble bust with stand

* Naked guy mannequin complete with exposed penis (see photo above)

3346439251_266c9e18a3.jpg

* Chock full o’ light fixtures and lamps

3346443701_14531a0ff3-1.jpg

* Cool iron gate or partition

china.jpg

* Real adult furniture in good condition (Wow!), like sideboards, dressers, a desk, bookcase, primitive dry sink and china cabinet.

All of the items in the house are priced about half of what they would be in an antique shop.

FLICKR, FLICKR, FLICKR!

Sale is this Saturday, March 14th at 69 Verplanck Avenue in Beacon, NY. 8:30am-4:30pm

CASH ONLY! There are ATMs on Main Street only a couple of blocks away. Metro North goes to Beacon and if you spend a friggin fortune, you might be able to talk us into delivery.

Here’s a rundown of what’s happening in Beacon for Second Saturday.

The estate sale down in Westchester last weekend was such a huge success that we decided to do our own in Beacon. This one will consist of antiques and vintage items leftover from other sales, stuff from Mario’s clean outs and pieces I want to move along so I can make room for new merchandise. My spring line, if you will. We’re also taking on some consignments from local dealers. There’s a garage full of cheap, cheap goodies, plus an apartment full of reasonably priced better stuff.

3331158003_57bc620ee0.jpg

I just started photographing some of the merch and uploaded to Flickr. I’ll have more photos up by next week.

This sale coincides with Beacon’s Second Saturday. Come for the day, stop by us, go to DIA, go gallery hopping at night! I’ll get the list of openings up here soon too. How does that sound?

WHEN: Saturday, March 14

TIME: 8:30am-4:30pm

Previously

We’ve been working like dawgs putting this sale together! We’ve been going down to Westchester every other day to price and display. Still pulling things out of closets and from boxes in the garage. These people were Pack! Rats!

Here’s some last minute finds that I didn’t get to photograph….

3256828188_e0790f487c.jpg

The couch above? Yards and yards of spare fabric. Is that called a bolt? I don’t even know. Anyway, I’m pricing it at about $60. Not a tag sale bargain, but definitely good for that Schumacher fabric. Between you and I, I don’t really want it to sell because I’d rather use it myself. There’s also some spare wallpaper and other fabric from around the house.

I found all of these old movie cameras in some closet upstairs. They’re probably 1940’s. There’s even shot film and 35mm family slides as well. Also a 1950’s compact chrome tripod and a subminiature camera. Very f**in cool!

This woman had an obsession with ducks. Or maybe it was her husband, but I doubt it. There’s gotta be like 50 duck related tschotskes. I’m going to have duck nighmares. Aflac!

There’s a bunch of newer stuff as well, which I always tend to overlook. Toys, small kitchen appliances, Ball jars, a tractor (anyone need a tractor?), Christmas junk, cooking crap, glassware…..

A couple of very cool vintage dresses, shoes and belts. There’s also some never worn crocheted skirt sets.

Many of the smalls are $1-5 and some of it wasn’t even worth a dollar, so I’m hoping people fill boxes so I don’t have to start counting quarters. Furniture that needs work starts at $5 for chairs and small tables. Some of the better pieces, like small china cabinets, are priced at $120-$180. The two couches are $75 apiece. The most expensive piece of furniture is $500 for the rounded oak china cabinet. Most expensive item in sale is the $700 cash register which may be more of an auction item, but we’ll try!

So much stuff. Hope you can make it. I’ll be the one pulling my hair out by the front door.

That’s 28 Jennifer Lane in Hartsdale, NY. This Saturday and Sunday, Feb 28th & March 1st. 8:30am-4pm

Only cash will be accepted for this one. Here’s a list of local ATM’s, so no excuses!

Just because the whole country is in the crapper doesn’t mean it’s ok to ignore the less fortunate. You still need to treat yourself right and you can help others while you’re at it. Here are four fun things you can do to clear your conscience.

Get drunk for the animals! Tonight at Angels and Kings in the East Village.

Super Vegan sponsors the monthly Vegan Drinks. It’s a chance to promote and discuss your animal rights agenda. Not a vegan? Then you really need to get your ass over there! You’re sooo 2008. What are you waiting for?

Get creative for the elderly! Spread that Valentine love around.

Etsy is teaming up with Citymeals on Wheels to bring handmade cards to seniors around the city. No, they don’t really have to be handmade or even vintage. You can buy cards. What’s in it for you? Well, if bringing smiles to lonely old people isn’t good enough, you’ll get some free Etsy publicity out of it. Deadline: February 2. Hurry, no time to waste! PS: How cute is the woman with the “So many men…” shirt?

Shop for culture! February 5th.

A bunch of independent fashion designers have formed a group called “Fundraising in Style” and their very first event is to benefit FABNYC. Portions of every purchase will be donated to Fourth Arts Block in the East Village. More info on their site or Facebook. Shout out to one of the designers, Miss Wit, a Brooklyn Flea neighbor.

Laugh for the Children! February 9th at the Gotham Comedy Club in Chelsea.

The “Comics Care” event will benefit several organizations that help underprivileged children,  such as The Fresh Air Fund and NY Yankees Foundation. Your host for the evening will be Michael DeStefano, big macher accountant at Ernst and Young and comedian extraordinaire. I went to junior high with him and haven’t seen him since. Ah, what did we ever do before Facebook? Anyway, he was kind of a jerk back then so I might have to heckle. We’ll see.

MLK’s Birthplace = Great Victorian!

MLK’s Birthplace = Great Victorian! published on

On January 15th, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr was born at 501 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, GA. His grandfather purchased the 1894 Queen Anne Victorian for $3500 in 1909.

By 1941, the King family moved out of the home and it was converted into a two family dwelling. They kept the house in the family and rented it out. Dr. King’s brother, also a reverend, lived on the second floor with his family into the early 60’s.

The home was restored in the 70’s and is now maintained by the National Park Service. Period furniture was brought in to replicate how the family lived during the 1930’s. Tours are limited so the home can be preserved for future generations.

Photos are not allowed in the home, which is probably why I couldn’t find any interior shots online.
