I don’t care what anybody says. I like that soy fake meat stuff. Yeah, I try to eat whole foods as much as possible, but beans all the time? You know what they say….good for your heart, but….
Anyway, if you’re a vegetarian New Yorker, chances are you’ve tried all the mock meat dishes at House of Vegetarian, Vegetarian Dim Sum House , Vegetarian Paradise and Zen Palate. Well, this is the place that sells to those restaurants. Ok, maybe. I just made that up.
Tian Yuan Veg is located at 6016 7th Avenue in Brooklyn’s Chinatown, Sunset Park. Can you get this stuff in Manhattan’s Chinatown? Yes. Can I buy it around the corner from my Bed Stuy house at Tony’s Country Life? Yes. But I felt the need to schlepp to Sunset Park to check it out.
So, was it worth the trip? Well, my freezer is fully stocked now. Plus, here’s the thing I love about Chinatown….the groceries are so inexpensive! I bought 2 FULL bags of vegetables for $7. Do you know what that would cost at Fairway? (I love you anyway, Fairway.)
Problem is, now I have to (get my husband to) cook all this shit.

Keep in mind that soy has high levels of estrogen that is linked to increased risk of breast cancer…
this is awesome, i knew there had to be a place like this in town somewhere. and it’s not far from the subway (tho it is the N train). i gotta check this out! i would love to know what kind of stuff you picked up!
p.s. you ever notice how the naysayers about soy products tend to assume that people who like them eat like meat-eaters do? you even point out how whole foods make up most of your diet, we’re not eating soyburgers every single day unlike some of our carnivorous counterparts.
I got…veg duck (different from the sheets with mushroom you get in the restaurants), chicken, pepper steak and some kind of beef thing. They had lots of seafood too, but I usually don’t like the texture of those.
Yeah well, I’ll risk the soy over the meat any day.
Soy is not the only source of estrogen! But it does all add up. A lot of folks don’t know that soy is one source….that’s all… no other point.
I usually go to May Wah in Chinatown for fake meat but will have to check this place out. I haven’t found fake meat there that’s as good as the stuff I get in restaurants.
when i lived in clinton hill there was a brief time when the local supermarket carried the restaurant-grade fake meats (i think it had something to do with Red Bamboo being nearby). It was definitely a cut above the usual stuff but I’ve never seen it since. I’m hitting both of these places asap!
