I can't vouch for whether Bayside is Queens' answer to Bay Ridge, but from what I have seen, the prices will be more reasonable in Bayside than in Bay Ridge and it seems like you will find more houses with private drives. It does feel more suburban than Bay Ridge, too--not sure if that matters. As for shops, you'll find independent shops and businesses on Bell Boulevard and Bay Terrace Plaza is a large outdoor shopping center (think: fancy stripmall with several strips) with the usual Mall drek: http://www.bayterrace.com/. Many listings mention that owners can walk to Bay Terrace and indeed we saw plenty of homes nearby. There are also some fine Korean BBQs, steak houses, and other restos. Hope this helps.

I saw that Time Out NY article.
I'm getting tired of beating my head against Brooklyn homes, particularly in Bay Ridge.

Are the 2 neighborhoods similar? The advantages I see are

- better schools
- better commute into the city
- less expensive for a detached house with parking. Way less.

Are the 2 neighborhoods comparable? Bay Ridge is a somewhat chowhound territory and the practical shopping is great. How is Bayside in that regard?

Thanks!
