Over the weekend we schlepped out to Staten Island to look at some flooring I found on Craigs. When I spoke to the guy (Cyrus) over the phone he informed me that a 1790 frame building was coming down and there were more goodies in an old brick structure. There was wide plank flooring, antique beams and clapboard siding amidst the ruins and I can have for $100. It sounded too good to be true!
And so it was. The Sanford and Son yard got me excited when I first entered. But after looking around, I became dismayed by the fact that all of the wood objects were left outside in the elements for months. The wood was warped and useless for our needs. The huge beams were wet, but most likely salvageable.
There was an antique stove (probably 1920’s?) which I thought about. It needed total rehab and he probably would’ve let it go for a decent price, but we didn’t feel like carting the damn thing off only to discover we’d have to spend thousands on restoration. There were a few more items which would’ve been worth the few bucks he might’ve charged for them, but we really came for a floor.
The brick building next door housed furniture which was in better shape. I’m assuming that’s the stuff he’s auctioning off. It was difficult to get around in there as it was packed, but there might be a bargain or two waiting for you.
Oh, just one more thing. After we left, we discovered that both of us had dog shit on our shoes. So if you go, you might want to be careful walking around in there.
And if anyone has about 150 sq ft of wide plank tongue and groove flooring, we’re still looking.

My BFF who lives in an old farmhouse in Warwick might be willing to part with her antique stove for the right price if you are still jonesin’ for one.
We haven’t been actively looking because we’re light years away from a kitchen reno, but if she wants to part with it..we’ll see. If we don’t take it, we can post it here. Photos please!
