AM NY did a feature on Friday called “Has NYC Lost It’s Soul”? This is something I think about alot. Well, I don’t have to think about it….I know my answer.
“It used to be a badge of honor to live in New York City, and we used to laugh at the people in the suburbs,” Jerilou Hammett, co-editor of the book “The Suburbanization of New York.”, “Urban areas were all about diversity and the struggle of the creative individuals…”
I have to agree. One of the reasons I moved out of Brooklyn a few years ago was because it was starting to feel alittle too much like Westchester (well, Park Slope did, anyway). I miss the community feel and the mom and pop shops. I even miss the graffiti and and grit. And most of all….the characters!
After living upstate for 3 years, I wanted to feel connected to NYC again, which is why we got the place in Bed Stuy. I think I longed for the city again simply because it’s my home and I’m still more comfortable there than anywhere else in the world. But the culture, restaurants, Starbucks….that you can get anywhere now.

Bet you don’t miss the crime.
Nobody wants to see high crime rates, but it was just something we lived with. Since I grew up in NYC in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, that’s all I knew. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
I’ve been meaning to pick up that book. Thanks for reminding me!
There is a Raymour & Flanigan in Chelsea. It just opened. I sort of wanted to ralph on their steps, just to, yanno…welcome them. NOT!
