Hey, old school New Yorkers! Remember those 1970′s commercials “What’s the story, Jerry?” They were for Jamaica Gas & Electric, aka JGE. Couldn’t find an original, but did come across this…. NY’s Historic Garages. NY Times The Stepford Homes. Hooked on Houses Living in Harry Met Sally. Design Sponge Twiggy Starburst Mirror. Brooklyn Limestone It seems like the best thing that could have happened to Beacon was our move back to the city. Every time I go back up to sort things out with the house, a new place has popped up on Main Street. Ah, but there are two huge projects in the works that have everyone in Beacon stoked. The Beacon Theater went dark in the 1960′s and has remained that way ever since. Finally! 4th Wall Productions has purchased the 800-seat performance hall and has plans to restore it back to it’s original 1934 glory. It will be used as a performance space as well as a movie house. The theater is raising funds to help with the restoration. There’s a concert coming up on September 18th featuring who-else-none-other-than-Pete Seeger. He probably played the original venue. The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls sits on the east side of town overlooking the water fall. The cluster of factory buildings has been abandoned for years. Finally! Restoration of the land and buildings have begun. The Roundhouse will evolve into hotels, artist live/work spaces and a catering/event venue. All green development! I managed to check out the Stowe house estate sale during the final hours of the final day. Apparently I missed quite a bit. The house was filled with antiquities. Everything from the furniture to the dishes to that crazy Victorian bicycle. I scored some vintage jewelry and kitchen wares. Went for the tschotkes, but I really wanted to check out this historic home. The Connecticut Stows purchased the home in 1906 for $8500. Harriet Beecher Stowe (the “e” was added in the early 1900′s) of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” fame wasn’t the only notable member of the family. There was also an American Revolution Captain and some dude who recast the Liberty Bell. The house looks as if it hasn’t been touched since it was built. The woodwork is to die for! There are built in cabinets, a friggin’ gorgeous antique cast iron stove hidden in the corner of the servant’s kitchen and a few beautiful mantels. Untouched is a good thing, but the new owner (yes, it has been sold) will have lots of plastering to do as it looks like the wallpaper is the only thing holding up the walls. No bother, it will all be worth it! So, take that other Brooklyn brownstone neighborhoods! Bay Ridge can have a seat at your table too. Who knew? (I didn’t.) This Budweiser commercial aired only one time on the first anniversary of September 11th. Bud did this so they wouldn’t benefit financially from the event. It’s really touching. Now if only their beer didn’t taste like piss water. Love this! Artist Chrissy Conant created this human rug masterpiece in 2005 out of silicon rubber. The hair is real! Effin awesome bear! $1800 from C.S. Post These faux furs minus the heads are only $179 from Faux Fur Comforter. OMG! Steampunk Mr. Potato Head! Instructables This Old House compare basket weave tile. Christie’s Comes to Brooklyn. Brooklyn Eagle Ikea Going Second Hand (in Sweden). Treehugger When we moved out of our Beacon home four months ago, we left most of the furniture and all of our artwork behind to stage the house. It looks great but ah, at what cost, my friends? For four months now we’ve been living out of totes because there’s nowhere to store the items we would like to unpack. Yes, we have closets and we brought dressers and our bed, a couch, a table and chairs…but honey, it’s not set up as it should be. And then there are the stupid things we just forgot to pack. “Oh honey, where is such and such?” “In Beacon.” It’s not easy, this double life. But it will all be over soon! I don’t want to jinx anything, but we can probably take our stuff out at this point. And we will, because if this deal falls through (Oh shit! Did I just jinx it?!) we’ll end up looking for renters by October. So, all of our crap needs to be out either way. Now I have the horrible task of actually emptying out the entire house (and garage and basement and attic) instead of putting it off. Ugh, maybe I prefer living without furniture. The mother load of stencils! The Stencil Library claims to be the world’s largest stencil mail order collection. You know what? They ain’t kidding! Not only does their catalogue list over 3500 designs, but they also sell accessories and give DIY tips on the site. There are even more how-to’s and room photos on their Design Inspiration blog. Oh but wait! There’s more! For those of you who just want to write something on your damn wall but can’t align individual letters, there’s an easy way out. Design your own words or phrase in a font of your choice. I do have to point out how lame you are if you can’t figure out how to take a level and draw a straight line, but….I’ll admit….I’d probably choose to take the shortcut too. The measuring between letters? Yeah, it’s a pain in the arse. The Stencil Library is a Brit company, so shipping will be pricier for those of us on this side of the pond. Happy Stenciling! Hello! This object is a refrigerator! Cat goes up a tree. Firemen can’t rescue her. Neighbors can’t rescue. Finally, a heroic tree guy comes and in bam! Just grabs her and sticks her in a bag. Done. |

You said that this ad was shown on the first anniversary of Sept. 11, but that’s incorrect. Sept. 11 has happened every year since 1753, or longer, depending upon the country, since some countries used different calendars. You should have said that the ad was aired on the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
