Holy Crap, Look What’s For Sale!
March 31, 2009

 after-3.jpg

Craig and Yvonne’s Victorian home is up for sale! I read about it on Brownstoner, of all places, a Brooklyn centric blog. I have a love/hate relationship with Craig and Yvonne even though I’ve never met them. I’m just sooo damn jealous that they have such a beautiful home that they’ve actually finished. Finished?! That’s unheard of in my world!

The Fanwood, NJ house is listed at $799k with Burgdorff Realtors. The 1875 six bedroom single family sits on 0.35 acres with taxes listed at $11,633. The restoration is friggin impeccable! Go to their website and check out the before and afters. These people are mad! Mad, I tell ya!!

I’d move to NJ for this. Who’s buying?

Helen Levitt’s NYC

 new-york-helen-levitt-c-1942.jpg

Street photographer Helen Levitt died in her home yesterday at the age of 95. Levitt was one of my inspirations as a photographer. There’s a wonderful obit in the Times, but I’d just like to share some of my favorite Levitt NYC shots.

Make Me An Offer Vintage Sale!
March 30, 2009

  • Sink vanity. Listed at $1200. I want it gone!

Out with the old, in with the new! It’s time to get ready for the Brooklyn Flea in Ft Greene. The outdoor market starts on April 18th. I do not, repeat, do not want to go out there with last year’s inventory. So, I’m having a virtual stoop sale. A “Make Me An Offer Sale”.

3044268804_3d49573dca.jpg

  • OMG, this is taking up half my storage space. It’s down to $195. What do you want to give me??

Check out the Reclaimed Home shop and pay no attention to the prices. I’m willing to come down big time on larger pieces especially, as they’re taking up the most space. The longer I’ve had it around, the less I’ll take.

You can also spend hours looking through old Flickr photos. Much of that has been sold, but I still have some pieces that were never uploaded to the store. So have fun with that!

Artwork and restored furniture is not as negotiable, but you can certainly try. I won’t be insulted by any offer. The worst that can happen is I’ll tell you to fek off.

You may even get local delivery out of me if you take lots of stuff or don’t bargain me down too much. We’ll see.

  • Please, get all light fixtures out of my face!

AD Home Design Show. Missed It.

 getbackscissorl1.jpg

I had every intention of going to the Architectural Digest Home Design Show over the weekend but it was not in the cards. I had a pre-implant tooth extraction gone bad on Thursday (I won’t go into the gory details) that knocked me out for the entire weekend. I don’t think it was the 2 hour dental surgery that did it, I believe it was all the drugs I was on afterward. I was hopped up like Neely O’Hara popping the dolls and I finally got permission from my dentist yesterday to stop everything. I’m feeling a lot better now, thank you.

Oh yeah, so anyway, I missed the Design Show. I only remembered that I missed it when I looked at 3 Rings this morning. They win my award for best write up. And check Get Back Inc. Can I want everything they have?

Lighting Countertops
March 25, 2009

 amber-onyx-2.jpg

Web Urbanist recently featured ten of the coolest counter and surface material designs. Although they’re all really beautiful, I noticed that the more spectacular ones are lit from behind.

So my question is, do you really need to spend a fortune on semi precious gemstones or lava to get that same glowing effect? Sure, if you have the money, be my guest (and loan me some). But I’m thinking that you can probably achieve a very cool effect by backlighting just about anything.

Some ideas:

1. Colored glass or plexi

2. Individual glass marbles, tiles or quartz stones

3. Transparent paint for glass

4. Stained glass

5. Embedded anything in resin

6. Punched metal

7. Old photographic transparencies

8. Strings of Christmas lights under clear glass

Now obviously if these are surfaces where water will penetrate, you’ll need to protect them. Do I even have to mention that any paint, holey metal or photo should be underneath the glass? And if it’s a countertop, make sure you’ve checked into heat, breakage and seams? But you knew that already, right?

The lighting is something that can be adjusted. You may not want it evenly lit. Perhaps some shadow areas would give a more dramatic effect. Just make sure you have your wiring and spacial issues worked out in advance! Keep in mind that lighting from behind will take up at least a couple inches, and that’s some narrow lighting I’m talking about.

Eco Friendly Eternal Housing
March 24, 2009

3382200402_8bd0b99ac4.jpg

Therapeutic Landscapes did a lovely, thoughtful post about Landscapes of Remembrance last week and asked for some input. Well, since I spent my Sunday at a cemetery, I can do just that.

Let me start by talking about me, because that’s my favorite subject. I’m terrified of pain and suffering, but once I’m dead, I don’t care what you do with me. I won’t feel it. I don’t want my decomposing body to take up good space on this earth. So, I’ve signed up to recycle my organs and the rest of me can be cremated and flushed down the toilet for all I care.

With the green movement well under way, are there more options for eco friendly burials these days?

Absolutely! But let’s backtrack by talking a bit about religion. Ok, I don’t know anything about religion, being the heathen that I am, but I did find out one thing over the weekend. Jews don’t embalm. They also don’t cremate (or tattoo, but that’s off topic). It has something to do with leaving the body as it came into this world. I’m sure Judaism isn’t the only religion to opt out on the hazardous embalming fluids, but I’ll let you fill me in if you know of others.

A green burial simply means no embalming fluids and a bio-degradable casket. There are green burial grounds popping up all over.

Going back to my cremation, I’ve learned that the use of fossil fuel during the process doesn’t make it the  most sustainable alternative.

The Great Burial Reef offers a burial of ashes at sea. Sounds like a fantastic idea! But the cheap bitch in me says “Why can’t my friends and family just take my ashes and throw them overboard themselves?”

A sky burial seems like the best option to me, but alas, it is SO NOT legal in the states! This is the Tibetan funerary practice of cutting up the body and letting the birds eat it. Talk about recycling! There is a sky burial cemetery in Texas, but the bird eating thing is only allowed for pets. Pets that may be buried with you. Now, I like THAT option! But dead or not, I’m not spending my eternity in Texas.
