Affordable NYC: Bushwick

Bushwick was among the possibilities when we decided to return to Brooklyn. We explored a bit, but realized we’re too old for that hipster meshugas. We wanted the lovely brownstone on a quiet tree lined street (Yes, I know there are brownstones in Bushwick). But being that I was once a hipster myself (albeit over 20 years ago in the East Village), I get it.

Bushwick 101, for those of you hiding under rocks….Williamsburg is over. Too pricey. The hipsters are being forced out in droves due to high rents and must make a mass L train exodus over to East Williamsburg and Bushwick. The final frontier: Canarsie!

Ok, actually, before there were hipsters there was (and is) a large population of poor and working class African Americans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans and other immigrants. And even a few born in Brooklyn white folks.

Like much of NYC, the area hit bad times in the 70′s. Like much of NYC today, the area is seeing a resurgence. And so, we see restaurants and mixed use venues popping up. Even though there’s new condo development and housing prices are going up, Bushwick still remains fairly affordable. And…if this aging hipster was 20+ years younger, I’d probably be renting a cool pad there, bathtub in kitchen and all.
